They use to be used to allow you to post, make threads, etc. However they've become useless.
Now it's more or less just used to see activity :)

Posting is like 2 points, making a thread is a few, voting is a few, being a paid member is 1000 each month that your membership renews, etc.

They are basically worthless at this point. Most forms of this type have some kind of "point" system. Reddit has "Karma", other forums keep track of the number of posts you contribute, and so on. They are all ways to get you involved in the community.

From the Unofficial FAQ (http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-595554/cr-un-official-faq)

2. What are CR points?

It is just something that shows how much you have involved in CR activities. Every time you post a reply in the forum, a comment in a video or guestbook, upload pictures to your profile, upload videos / Crunchyland designs (and they have to be approved), or have an Anime Member longer than a month, you'll receive points in return. However, the thing that you must not do to earn these points is spamming. If the Moderators found that you are spamming just to get a CR point, you will be punished. Besides, CR points are pointless once you have over 500 points.

Here's an old breakdown of the point system:

Case in point, they're worthless. PS this is a personal thread. it'll be better to ask personal questions next in the General Help Thread.

Hope that helps. Cheers.

I do not think they are so useless. I think someone with a large number of points shows that they have a good amount of experience and knowledge about crunchyroll. But as with all things use common sense and don't believe everything you read. With that said I do think it gives a bit of credibility.

Creating a thread is so difficult, because you'll need like 500 cr points in order to at least create a thread, unless you get a Premium Membership.

One reason they might have set that so high is to prevent "Bots" from opening up fake or temporary accounts and spamming the forums. But after a month of being a premium member, you'll have thread abilities. Plus it'll give you time to get use to the forum culture by immersing yourself in the various existing threads, and by the time you accumulate those 500 points, your first thread will be a success.

Or something...

Its a wrong. I believe the points should be spread amongst ourselves equally.
