Code Geass is Japanese Nationalism at its best

Code Geass is Japanese Nationalism at its best. Discuss.

So, what is your opinion?

EDIT - People seem to think I'm offended I AM NOT. Sure, some parts ARE annoying, but it does not OFFEND me, though it DID make me think this in MY opinion.

It's fiction. I don't see it as a direct dig toward anything or as propaganda. In my mind it isn't anything in the real world. It's a story to be enjoyed not analyzed for real world relations.

If you're offended by references to the old British Empire then Germans should be offended every time there's a video game about killing Nazis. But Nazis are gone, and so is the British Empire. Neither are representative of modern Germany or the UK and I'd be baffled by anyone who viewed them as such. It's just a pseudo-intellectual reference.

And just to prove that fact I'm here indirectly defending a series I think is almost* complete bollocks.

Sorry in advance for being off topic, random, and odd.

But, I'm curious.

Do you like Death Note?

I always compare Code Geass and Death Note on some level. Super smart guys gain power to control people, on some level, to create a new world they have imagined.

I stopped watching after episode 25, but up until then yes I did. And I've made the same comparison as well. What's crazy is that Death Note and Code Geass both started their anime in the same season, but as the Death Note manga had been around for three years by then I can't imagine there not being a connection between it and Code Geass.

Although it played off themes from Neon Genesis Evangelion quite often as well, albeit more subtly.

I forget, was that after you know who died?

So what makes you like Death Note but not Code Geass? Again, curious.

The same season? Wow.

I lol'd so hard at the the name of this thread.

But you do have a point as Japanese love to add historical context from every other country besides theirs. I don't mean things like Sengoku Basara or Death Frenzy. There hasn't been an anime about Japan invading and conquering parts of China...

But anywho it is a work of fiction and I don't think its that extreme to be nationalism.

You should watch season 2, as well. It gets much better. Hating on Code Geass when you haven't even watched all of it, doesn't sound right to me.

Yeah. I watched a couple more after that but lost interest pretty quick. I'll finish it someday.

Hm...

Let's see if I can do this without being asininely argumentative, since Code Geass really gets under my skin.

I'll come back to this in about an hour.

Think their first episodes were about two days apart, yeah.

Edit:

Oh no, I've finished Code Geass. Just so I could hate on it with absolute authority.

I haven't finished Death Note yet though.

Edit:

They kind of did that in Code Geass though, if you think about it.

THIS.

I'm sick of it. Wish they'd actually ADMIT things like that.

I look forward to it! I'm not looking for an agrument or to provoke you. I'm really just curious.

I like Code Geass, but I'm not looking to defend it. I'm more curious on the Death Note liking and Code Geass disliking. Because they are similar in my mind and I'm interested in the thought behind it.

Whether it is or it isn't, it works quite well as a plot device and I can see the show going any other way without it. besides, Zero's/Lelouch's idea of Japan looks closer to that of USA than modern day japan. (United states of japan or whatever it is)
