Code Geass is Japanese Nationalism at its best
Posted 6/1/13
I don't believe it was Japanese Nationalism, the anime did not paint any side with a favourable light. It was just a fictional representation. It was not even historically accurate.

People are reading too much into it. Nationalists are a dying breed in any country, not just Japan.

And even if it was, it's still just a piece of fiction, literature should be given freedom no matter what the agenda.

THIS.

I'm sick of it. Wish they'd actually ADMIT things like that.

Well don't I feel special? (So glad my favorite subject is history and I had to take Global this and last year)

Yes they are mature enough to have historical context in works of media and I give them that a 100% But 90% of the time it is of other countries mistakes and what knot. Who would want to place their own countries faults in media but I say if you're going to be edgy enough to have history in works of literature and media than go all out and don't exclude yourself. That's just me.

But you do have a point as Japanese love to add historical context from every other country besides theirs. I don't mean things like Sengoku Basara or Death Frenzy. There hasn't been an anime about Japan invading and conquering parts of China...

But anywho it is a work of fiction and I don't think its that extreme to be nationalism.

Because it's financial suicide to make an anime/movie that paints Japan in a bad light.

Just like you don't see many Hollywood films depicting about the mistreatment of civilians by the US army in the middle east. Instead you get lots of movies about Killing Hitler/Nazi and whatnot. Those are guaranteed box office hits.

Then once again, we would have to include a whole bunch of other countires in that statement.

You think that the US is free of this sentiment?

@GayAsianBoy Have you ever seen or heard of the recent movie Django Unchained? It was about slavery and racism. Granted it was action packed the setting was till during slavery in the south.

@0nigokko It is debated topic indeed. I don't think MURICA is an exception at all. The only thing that I can think is Django Unchained which I just named. But usually doesn't MURICA just avoid using historical content in their media? Well....cartoons and sitcoms and what knot.

Difference is, the States don't hide that. It's in books, talked about etc. In Japan however, they STILL deny their war crimes, don't apologize for them and do other things like change their own school textbooks. Why, up until recently people in Japan didn't know about Pearl Harbor!! And what of the recent statements the Japanese mayor made about the infamous Comfort Women?

Disgusting.

Gasaraki had some nationalism mixed in with its politically deep story.

Thats the best example in recent history, i dont think America avoids it so much as they have gotten really really good at hiding it or making it seem like something other than what it is.

ROFL

because when you talk about one countries nationalism it would be blantently stupid to ignore anothers.

Also America tends to have the worst [read: best] examples of tooting their own horn

Uh yes I have and we are NO better than they are.

Your kidding yourself if you think otherwise, infact if anything Japan learned all it knows about denying and hiding from AMERICA

(On a side note I feel so out of place as you guys are way older than me but I'm talking to you all about politics like its nothing)

You have a point there. Either I'm not looking hard enough but I can't really think of Americans having historical context in their works. Was The Boy In Stripped Pajamas made in america? All I know is that they don't dare or rather rarely put it into TV programs but movies are another thing. All Americans are world heroes that protect everybody from terrorism. You didn't know? (Obvious sarcasm is obvious)

The topic was the Nationalism of Code Geass, a JAPANESE anime. Obviously, the one country it should have extended to was JAPAN. I'm not ignoring other countries issues - but THIS topic was about Nationalism in Code Geass and Japan - not "America's problems".

I think you seriously need to look up Japan's history. ALL countries hide things - even mine, the not-so-great UK. But THIS topic is about Code Geass and JAPAN NOT other countries. Japan should be the one being discussed - America or any other country should not be dragged into this discussion.
