They shouldn't be offensive. They're just hand gestures for goodness sake.

The article also says that you can get arrested in the Philippines for curling your pointer finger forward and motioning repeatedly if you're trying to tell a person to "come here". There, the gesture is only used with dogs.

Are these hand gestures really offensive? Is the stuff in the article really true?

Eh?!?! I live and have grown up in the Philippines and I've used this gesture more times than I can remember and as far as I can tell, many of my friends have used this gesture as well. I've never been arrested. I've never even been in a police precinct.

I do remember some folks telling us kids not to use this gesture back in my childhood days but as far as I can tell at the moment, people here today don't quite find it offensive and certainly not something you can get arrested for.

So peeps if you ever go to the Philippines and get arrested for using the one finger beckoning gesture, you should get a lawyer and sue the arse of the cop that arrested you and the person who had you arrested!!!

If the back of your hand is facing the person when doing a V, then it is an insult that is worse then the bird.

The V hand gesture is rarely used in Australia. But when it is used it mean 'up ya'. So yeah it's still kinda flipping the bird. That's with your palm facing yourself. It means peace if your palm is facing them.

Yes, just like flipping the bird is supposed to resemble the male private part, the "V" in Europe symbolizes a female's open legs up in the air.
I wonder how that came about, America using a male gesture and Europe a female one..... anybody?

Er... about that, the backwards peace/ v sign means "Up Yours" so yeah it is offensive. It does not, however, symbolise a female's open legs up in the air lol. (That was a joke right? )

I don't know,...... was it?

Well, the ones about Brazil (the 3º one and the 5º one) its not really that interpretation...

The3º ts because its something that sometimes is used to say to someone "go take in the ass" D:
But normally, no one cares about it, for it to be used like that, its needed to say the phrase together :)

Sometimes you can use it to say that something is perfect too. So its not really offensive.

The 5º it just means "rock & roll". No one interprets the way its wrote there :X

According to the article if you use the V sign in Great Britain, Australia, Ireland, or New Zealand, you're basically dropping the F-bomb.

No. That's incorrect. If you have the palm side of your hand facing towards the recipient while your fingers are showing "V", that's fine, it means "peace" or "all right".
If the back of your hand is towards the recipient while the "V" sign is shown, it means "F**k you" or "Up yours!".

If you put the middle finger up in America, it's pretty offensive.
