Okay, so for many of you, this was the first anime you saw. It certainly was for me, and got me hooked on anime in general.

And while that in itself is an interesting topic, I thought I'd focus on something else about this series. The fact that Robotech is actually an amalgamation of three different shows (Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, Genesis Climber Mospeada).

What's your opinion on that? Did Carl Macek butcher these shows by combining them like this, or do you think they did okay?

When I was growing up watching these shows, I didn't even consider that aspect. And today, for the most part, I still think they did a fairly okay job at trying to link the three shows together story/continuity-wise.

But some nagging questions always came up, like what happened to Rick Hunter. And did Dana die fighting the Invid Invasion since she wasn't in the third show?

Do you like what they did, or do you think they ruined those shows because of it?

Total butcher job and because of it... we haven't been able to see the sequels to Macross here because they don't fit with his Frankenstein's monster show put together from parts of other shows. Silly syndication rules made them do it. They still have the rights to Macross unfortunately.

As for what happened to Rick, Minmei, Lancer, et al... There was manga/comics that came later. And even an OVA. I have the VHS for Robotech II: The Sentinels. 3 episodes, has a wedding! I also bought a screenplay/storyboard that came out after it was cancelled.

Now, if you want to know what happened to Hikaru (Rick), Misa (Lisa), Minmei for real you need to look at the original Macross Universe instead. It has nothing to do with protoculture...

What did they do well? They introduced a generation to anime who hadn't already seen Yamato, Grendizer, et al. That's it.

Don't forget the movie Robotech:Shadow Chronicles

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robotech:_The_Shadow_Chronicles

It starts immediately after the New Generation ends, introduces a new enemy and has some interaction regarding Adm. Hunter, and Dana Sterling's younger sister as well as some characters from the "New Generation" like Scott and the Invid girl...(can't remember her name!).

I also noticed that they are about to release one more sequel "Love Live Alive".

synopsis:
The Robotech saga continues in this exciting new adventure. Lieutenant "Lancer" Belmont, a veteran of the Robotech's New Generation, recounts his journey from before his first encounter with Scott Bernard to the aftermath following Admiral Rick Hunter's expedition to liberate the Earth from the mysterious Invid race. Join your favorite characters once again in this follow-up to the smash-hit ROBOTECH series.

I just wish Robotech was not rated TV-Y7, I might watch it again otherwise.

About that....I had actually just watched it again recently and there was nudity that I honestly don't remember being there.

As others have said, the butchering they did to tie the series together really messed things up for Macross.

BTW, does anyone else remember the short lived Robotech: The Movie. I actually saw it in the theater. It was a rip off of Megazone 23 and the parents did not pay attention to its rating. So, it was pulled from the theaters.

Also, Japanese courts (nor the actual rights holders) recognize Harmony Gold's claims on all things Macross. HG lost their case in Japanese and other foreign courts. It's just that nobody has been willing to put up the money for a legal fight here in the USA. I really wish someone would. Then, we could more easily get the excellent follow-up series (Macross Zero and Frontier) along with all of the great merchandise.

I enjoyed Robotech back in the day, but it really was a butcher job. Someone should pull HG's licencing rights, or buy them out.

wait, didn't ADV do a release of the original Macross series a few years ago? I know I remember seeing their version of the first episode.

Yes! And Marii Ijima voices both the English and Japanese versions of Lynn Minmei! First time ever the same seiyuu did both parts and probably the first time both parts have been done 20-odd years apart (1984, 2006).

I started watching anime before Robotech.. my drug of choice was Star Blazers and the US industry had a field day with that one as well.. not as bad as Robotech in hindsight (I don't think anything ever was honestly.. ). That said I did enjoy Robotech when it came out even if I wanted to Drop-kick Minmei.. (omg I hear her song now at the first bar and I want to gouge my ears out...). Unfortunately because of THAT destruction I really don't want to see Macross or any of the other shows that were Frankensteined together to make a whole new story. I think I'm too emotionally scarred..

Wow, seeing this thread that I have thought about doing, glad to see some interest!

Now be forewarned for a long rant :)

1) Did Carl Macek butcher these shows by combining them like this....SCREAMS YES AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS!

2) Do you like what they did, or do you think they ruined those shows because of it? For people who never gave Macross or Mosepda a chance, I would say YES!

3) Harmony Gold --> The worst absolute curse word in Anime history!

4) Megazone 23 was a good series, own it on DVD!

A very special shoutout for drachelan

That is F--KING hilarious!

BTW: Curse you for getting that song stuck in my head again!

Which brings me to my next point

5) Reba West (aka English singing Minmei) is the reason why I now DESPISE dubs!

To anyone who abandonded Macross because of roBLOWtech...please give the REAL Macross another chance, watch the series then watch Macross: Do You Remember Love. Mari Iijima singing Ai Oboete Imasu Ka is pure awesomeness

LMFAO RoBLOWtech.. I've never heard that one before.. ahahahahha Not sure I want to see the old Macross. I watched because it was another "Japanimation" thing out and I loved that style and storytelling in general (to the contrast of Tom and Jerry and Bugs Bunny - which was not bad.. I love those.. but it was a start contrast) however I am just not much of a mecha person. I think the most I'd do in terms of mecha was Vandread and Full Metal Panic.

There is a good love triangle/story and the singing IS awesome. Even if your not big on mecha, this would be a mecha one to watch (as it is not solely mecha-pr0n as some mecha series are)

Shut up you with that remark, I find that highly offensive!!

Robotech, To me, Was the first REAL anime, Other than SPEED RACER, that didn't rely on ridiculous characters to keep you entertained, (I'm referring to the original ASTRO BOY and KIMBA the WHITE LION).

Macross & Mospeda Gainer, Seemed more Robotech, than did Southern Cross.
