So you want to be a Moderator!?!
Posted 6/4/13 , edited 6/17/13
1) What skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for this position? I possess effective communication skills and management skills. I am proficient in Japanese Mandarin Cantonese Spanish and Korean. I also excel in IT and computer forensics. I am great at listening and mediating and solving problems. I am a hard worker and I can multitask.

2) What would your moderation style be?
My style of moderation is the professional approach towards the users. I believe that listening and taking into consideration to what people are saying and coming to an agreement and full understanding is effective in being a great moderator. My style also includes friendship and little dash of mediating and integrity. I believe that everyone should be treated equally and with the utmost respect. Basically I will mediate with users who break the rules and reason with them in a warm friendly approach rather than take action without thinking. If they continue to break the rules I would usually give them a light infraction depending on the severity then increase the infraction.

3) How often do you frequent the official forum categories, and do you post often?
I often visit the forums about 4 hours a day and post quite frequently

4) Have you reported inappropriate threads before? If so, how often?

yes I have. In the past I have reported spammers and bots as well as trolls flammers and racists

5) What do you feel is an appropriate amount of time to spend moderating?
depending on the workload I will spend at least 5 hours or more depending. If there is a great deal of work to be done I will take my time to complete any necessary tasks

6) Aside from Anime, what other hobbies do you have?
Besides anime I actually instruct 2 Japanese classes and 1 Mandarin class and one Tae Kwon Do class. I also love to draw and submerse in arts and crafts. Cooking is a passion for me and I love to bake

7) What timezone do you live in?
Pacific Standard Time

8) If you have any other comments that you feel are necessary and weren't covered in the other questions, you may write them here:
I believe I am a well suited candidate to become CR's loving and caring mod. I possess the ability to speak other languages in case there are any miscommunications within the community. If I am selected I will contribute as much of my time making CR safe and enjoyable. I see this as an excellent opportunity to contribute to CR understanding that it is a welll known site and an opportunity to meet new amazing people on here. not only will I be a great and loving mod I will also act as a guardian and a person users can talk to if they need personal advice. I always check the site news daily to see if there was any applications and this is my chance. If I dont get chosen there is always next time but goodluck to all

1) What skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for this position?

I have been around forums for many years and have been a moderator on a fair few of them in the past and have gathered no complaints.

2) What would your moderation style be?

Fair but to the guidelines, it is fairly simple, if someone breaks the rules then they will get punished accordingly. FIrst offenders would get a warning (unless it is a severe offence) and after that a short ban, followed by a longer one and perhaps after that even a permanent one. I understand these forums can be accessed by anyone so keeping topics/forum posts explicit free as possible would be a guarantee, unless it is obviously stated in the title that it is targeted to a mature audience. Of course I would not abuse the privilege of being a mod.

3) How often do you frequent the official forum categories, and do you post often?

Everyday, probably culminating to about 2-3 hours a day.

4) Have you reported inappropriate threads before? If so, how often?

I do not believe I have, maybe inappropriate posts but they have been few.

1) What skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for this position?

I've been a constant member frequenting CR since 2009. I try to keep up on the latest news in the anime/manga community to establish a point of reference for friends and other users. I'm a senior project lead in my current role, and outside of professional work, I enjoy other group-based activities such as D&D 3.5 and Cards Against Humanity.

2) What would your moderation style be?

moderation style would be as clean and fair as possible. There is an expectation for how one should conduct themselves within a community such as this.

-Remediation of conflicts as fair as possible. ( every situation is different, and you can't win them all, but you try everytime)
-Removal of links or items infringing on 3rd-party. (items like this can be extremely detrimental to reputation and get content pulled)
-Reminder of the rules and expectations
-Have fun! Everyone is here because they share the same interests.

3) How often do you frequent the official forum categories, and do you post often?

I frequent the official forums quite often, but I withhold from posting generally. I've posted in multiple forums for a long time now, but instead of starting conversations, I like to hear other's opinions and ideas. A flexible schedule can lead to sifting through threads, and not letting others participate as much.

4) Have you reported inappropriate threads before? If so, how often?

I tend to stick to the front page. I have reported numerous messages within episodes either with links to infringing content or less than tasteful comments. I spend the most of my time flagging spoilers in new episodes. I do go looking through the forums, but with the newest episodes being released, attention is focused front and center during those times.

5) What do you feel is an appropriate amount of time to spend moderating?

That is a very open-ended question. It really comes down to the social ebb and flow of the community, the total amount of help that CR staff has on hand, ect.

Someone may only be able to assist for a few hours, while someone like myself has the capability to moderate for most of the day.

As long as a helpful presence is available most of the time, or especially during times of excitement or controversy, I believe the answer is however much balances the load.

6) Aside from Anime, what other hobbies do you have?

Computer Networking
PC/Console Gaming
Gunpla
Muay Thai
Hi-Fi Audio
Hiking
Traveling
outdoor sports
World studies
edit: how did I forget Reddit?

7) What timezone do you live in?

Arizona UTC -7

Being able to speak and work with various demographics is a practiced skill. A moderator or leader needs to be able to problem solve in a fair manner and while working to exclude no-one.

I'm sure everyone at one time or another has had a thread closed in a forum for posting in the wrong area, or not meeting a minimum post limit for certain topics. That is a lawful evil way of looking at moderating, and not appropriate here.

We are all here because we want to be, lets enjoy it.

couldn't hurt to apply, I guess.

1) What skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for this position?
I'm a lazy bum who spends all day on forums.

2) What would your moderation style be?
Lenient for first time offenders, hard on repeat offenders. The usual in that respect, I guess. I do a lot more reading than posting so I think a lot of what I do would be from behind the scenes, so to speak.

3) How often do you frequent the official forum categories, and do you post often?
I read quite a bit, post very rarely

4) Have you reported inappropriate threads before? If so, how often?
I have on other forums but I don't see them too often here. I think I've only reported one or two.

5) What do you feel is an appropriate amount of time to spend moderating?
All day, but passively. Do your normal browsing and if you see anything objectionable or get any messages do your moderating then.

6) Aside from Anime, what other hobbies do you have?
Not a whole lot really, just boating, target shooting, music, and some occasional DIY.

7) What timezone do you live in?
GMT-6

[1) What skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for this position?

I have experience editing books and articles, editing in general. I'm also a novelist, with 2 books in the works and a few short stories released on the internet (pretty much an English junky). I know how important it is to keep a posts overall message and expression when editing. I'm 26 years old so I'm mature enough to handle it, not really a skill but I would think its fairly important still. I've never been a mod honestly but I've been friends with some and talked with them about things before on a few sites. I'm a fast learner and really easy going in nature.

2) What would your moderation style be?

If I could describe it in one word it would probably be "Egalitarianism". While I agree rules are important and will be followed, I think its more important that everyone is held accountable and treated equally. I'm a strong believer in equality and anything that is along the lines of discrimination, hostility, racism, personal attacks, suicidal tensions or manic depression, and other serious issues would be dealt with swiftly upon notice or being reported to prevent hysteria. For the most part though I would be a laxed mod though because either the other mods are doing a fairly good job or this community is pretty cool. I believe in second chances but I also believe 3rd strike and your out. I don't like deciding big punishments by myself though and would work with other CR staff/mods to ensure big decisions are agreeable in terms of punishments like bans. On the subject of cussing, I think as long as its not a barrage or long string of curse words and the user isn't personally attacking someone then its not that big of a deal.

3) How often do you frequent the official forum categories, and do you post often?

I frequent, post, lurk, and discuss in the general section of the forums regularly. I lurk others but don't post as much there, I enjoy observing others discussions and comments more than posting my own usually. I don't lurk the others nearly as much as the general section but If I became a mod, I would definitely be more active in other topics. It comes with the responsibility besides, I would be a forum member first and a mod second in general.

4) Have you reported inappropriate threads before? If so, how often?

I don't recall ever reporting a thread or post. Mostly because I was worried that I would report something that didn't need reporting or bothering the staff (catch 22) but it would be different as a mod. I've seen what kinds of posts get deleted though and what other kinds of editing has gone on over the years I've been lurking. Obviously becoming a mod would require participation in the thinking and judging aspect. I'm an INTJ so this won't be hard at all.

5) What do you feel is an appropriate amount of time to spend moderating?

I don't believe there is such a thing as too much but there is definitely a too little time spent aspect. As I said before though, it would be important to be a forum member first and a mod second. I don't think I would be moderating much but lurking and posting more. Of course I'd be skimming and checking sections of the site regularly for misconduct but the idea is to prevent it by being a member of the community and encouraging a fun and easy going atmosphere before the need to moderate it.

6) Aside from Anime, what other hobbies do you have?

I read a lot of Korean manga (webtoonlive anyone?), I also read Japanese manga, anime music video editing (Not sure If I'm allowed to link my amv.org profile so I wont), horror movie enthusiast, did I mention anime thanks to CR :P. Writing and editing in general is a hobby, I've released short stories on the internet and have 2 novels in the works. Cruising the interweb is a hobby. I also do gaming (mostly horror and mmorpg)

7) What timezone do you live in?

I am in the eastern timezone (Kentucky, USA)

8) If you have any other comments that you feel are necessary and weren't covered in the other questions, you may write them here:

I'm most active in very early mornings anywhere from 7AM to 2PM on Thursday-Saturday. On Sunday-Wednesday I'm fairly open till college classes start in the fall. During this time I'll probably be spending more time at the computer though due to online classes and homework. Multitasking ftw! One final note would be that while I work 3rd shift, I have a smart phone and can check the forums on it during my breaks and lunch 10PM-7AM Wednesday nights through Saturday nights. I do sometimes anyway just to see what people are talking about. I've thought about asking you guys if you needed an editor for anything on the site but figured if you really needed help in that area, you would have asked anyway.

1) What skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for this position?

I have experience in customer service in dealing with, mainly, concerns and issues. I'm very punctual, so I'm always on top of what I need to do or meet weekly goals. I'm also highly organized and have a keen eye for the smallest of small for details. I already regularly double-check and plan everything before engaging in any kind of activity -- though it might be due to my paranoia and obsessive need for structure in anything that I do.

2) What would your moderation style be?

I'm a very patient person in general, but I'm be firm, yet reasonable. If anything gets out of hand and becomes too much for me to handle alone, I would not hesitate to ask help from a fellow moderator.

3) How often do you frequent the official forum categories, and do you post often?

As often as new posts come out. However, I don't usually participate by posting a reply because sometimes I don't find it necessary to. I post on forums I find interesting or if I feel the need to share my own opinion regarding the topic.

4) Have you reported inappropriate threads before? If so, how often?

I don't think I've actually come across many inappropriate threads. It might be because the previous moderator already lock or took it down.

5) What do you feel is an appropriate amount of time to spend moderating?

I don't feel that there is an actual "appropriate amount of time" to spend moderating. I believe that moderating is something one does throughout the day. I wouldn't want to sit in front of the computer 8 hours straight moderating forums with slow traffic during times people aren't really there. I suppose the ideal way to handle the forums would be to periodically check the forums throughout the day; maybe spend a little bit more time on the times one do check the forums when necessary.

6) Aside from Anime, what other hobbies do you have?

I take Shinkendo as my means of exercise and to relieve stress. I also doodle and/or type on an online journal to relax when I have time.

7) What timezone do you live in?

Pacific Time Zone (GMT -8)
