Moderator Application

Questions
Novasis

1▲ Skills - I know of every basic thing there is to know about editing in CR for one. I fallow all guide lines set by CR, and in every post that distributes a set of rules to a given thread. I'm very friendly and can take criticism very easily so if there is any user that seems to be a bit aggravated for a certain reason, I can remain calm in the situation and handle any form of retaliation the individual may give me. I'm a great problem solver and I'm rarely busy when at home/online. A high knowledge of the CR anime. I am highly mature for a 17 year old and will show respect for anyone and everyone.

I have past experience as an in-game moderator for an MMORPG called Runescape. I was also a forum moderator for the same game. I later became forum moderator for several private servers and eventually ran my own server. As leader of a role playing group on CR I also know what is to be expected when moderating.

2▲ Moderation Style - A mix of Intervention and Anticipation - If I see a problem arising I will hint the user on it. If I see that the problem isn't a huge issue then I'll wait until any clear cuts or violations occur to administer a warning or punishment.

3▲ Frequency of forum viewing and posting - Everyday for at least an hour or so and yes I post quite a bit. Although this time and amount would definitely increase with the position of a moderator. I also tend to scroll a lot through the comments after watching a video.

4▲ Consistency on reporting threads - In all honesty I don't usually see many inappropriate threads, but I do believe I've seen an inappropriate post once or twice which I remember reporting.

5▲ Appropriate time of moderating daily - Probably most of the time I spend on the computer, I spend on CR, which would be a consistent 4-5 hours daily. The variable on whether I'm busy or not, and seeing that it's summer, I'll have plenty of time on my hands.

6▲ Hobbies - Basketball; This is basically all I do besides come home and get on CR. Any other hobby I might have isn't even consistent enough to be called a hobby.

7▲ Timezone - Eastern

8▲ Comments - I take this kind of thing seriously so by appointing me moderator, I'll be one less person to worry about causing any kind of mayhem on CR.

1) What skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for this position?

Experience mostly. I've moderated for many websites before. As well as made my own websites with having custom made forums myself.

2) What would your moderation style be?

Uphold the rules and make sure everyone is following them and having fun.

3) How often do you frequent the official forum categories, and do you post often?

Daily (even at work but don't tell). And yes I do post often.

4) Have you reported inappropriate threads before? If so, how often?

Yes several times. As often as I found them.

5) What do you feel is an appropriate amount of time to spend moderating?

Honestly as much time as needed. I can say 2-5 hours daily but, I'd find it better to come on multiple times a day.

6) Aside from Anime, what other hobbies do you have?

Oh that's tough kinda haha. Well Manga of course. Video games on occasion. And of course hanging out with friends BBQing and drinking!

7) What timezone do you live in?

(PDT) Pacific same as you awesome guys at Crunchyroll.

8) If you have any other comments that you feel are necessary and weren't covered in the other questions, you may write them here:

Well I'll just drop a little more information here and that will be it! My name is Justin, I'm 24 years old. Crunchyroll has been my favorite site for these last couple + years. And I can't wait to see you guys again at Anime Expo in 24 days! I'll sport my Crunchyroll shirt too :p
Oh and btw I have a beard. That should help my chances here right?

Much love Crunchyroll!

1) What skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for this position?

All throughout high school and now into college, I have been great at keeping a group on people on task and together. I have worked both on stage as an actor and in a lab as a lab technician. In both situations I have had to keep my peers focused and at times kept the peace by acting as a moderator when conflict arose. Also, while working in labs I have gained a great ability to translate confusing terms and situations to people in a more understandable fashion. I feel like these skills can be used as a moderator to keep the forums and website problem free by quickly assessing the situation at had and using a quick effective response to end it. Also my natural love of learning about new things will have me on the forums often to learn from other posting about shows they are watching.

2) What would your moderation style be?

I feel that in a moderator position I would act as a watchful guard over whatever my duty may be. I would answer any question needed to be answered, but I would make sure a situation needed me before diving in to keep problems from exploding in my face so to speak.

3) How often do you frequent the official forum categories, and do you post often?

I am fairly new to the site but I try to check the forums a few times a day, as well as in between episodes of whatever I happen to be watching. I have yet to post anything really, but I think that would tie into how I would facilitate the forums as a moderator by only getting involved when needed. Otherwise I post when I know an answer to a question or when I have some pertinent information.

4) Have you reported inappropriate threads before? If so, how often?

I have been lucky to not have to do that no.

5) What do you feel is an appropriate amount of time to spend moderating?

i think that an appropriate time is very similar to what I have mentioned about above. Consistantly through the day and between every episode or video.

6) Aside from Anime, what other hobbies do you have?

Apart from anime, I work in a laboratory at a hospital and at a bookstore, and spend any other time reading or playing one of 6 instruments I know. I also play video games and rock climb with friends, as well as cosplay in a cosplay group of about 9 people.

7) What timezone do you live in?

Eastern Standard Time

8) If you have any other comments that you feel are necessary and weren't covered in the other questions, you may write them here:

No, but if any elaboration is needed on any of my answers feel free to shoot my an email or message. Thank you for your consideration.

1) What skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for this position?

I'm fairly articulate, well-spoken, and possess a sense of humor. But mostly, having moderated Crunchyroll already for almost 5 years from being a chat mod to a site mod, I'm familiar with how to use the site functions to actually lay down the law like a boss when the circumstance calls for it.

Ya'knowwhati'msayin'?

2) What would your moderation style be?

I'd like to think that within my time actually moderating the site with my totalitarian fist of pain, I stuck with what I initially had posted back in my first application way back in May of 2008.

My moderation style would have to depend on the situation being presented. It can be malleable according to the circumstance, but generally I have more of a 'work-it-out' or 'civil' methodology. Being articulate, polite, and a listener is usually the way I like to approach disagreement (which I know only tends to work if I have compliance).

For myself, I have a three-time warning policy before I decide to use some drastic measures, but this also depends on the type of offense which is usually up to my own discretion. Of course, if I cannot handle the situation in regards to a hostile CR user, then I would consult another moderator to make his/her own assessment on the matter.

Years as a moderator has somewhat changed this philosophy in a way, considering the types of offenses that I've dealt with on this site, but this is something that I generally hold true.

3) How often do you frequent the official forum categories, and do you post often?

I used to post a lot in the Help Section and elsewhere for the heck of it. Life happened, zombies happened--this kept me from activitely participating in the forums as much as before.

4) Have you reported inappropriate threads before? If so, how often?

I've never reported threads normally because I had a means of contacting someone who could close the thread directly. In due time, I was able to deal with these things myself on a regular basis.

5) What do you feel is an appropriate amount of time to spend moderating?

Moderating is something you do in your spare time. It is a volunteer job and it should be treated as such. Whatever time a person has and is willing to spend that time making sure that CR is safe and clean makes it an appropriate amount in most situations.

So like, 24/7 pretty much.

Kidding.

Maybe.

6) Aside from Anime, what other hobbies do you have?

Drawing, zombie killing, gaming (this is different from zombie killing), Let's Plays with Zeronite, bacteria, music, and tv. Normal things.

7) What timezone do you live in?

Eastern Standard Time or GMT-5
Eastern Daylight Time or GMT-4

8) If you have any other comments that you feel are necessary and weren't covered in the other questions, you may write them here:

One late afternoon, I walked along the road homeward bound and noticed something strange off the beaten path. I'm not sure what struck me as weird at first--perhaps it was the peculiar way the leaves were strewn about, or maybe it was the soil that seemed a little bit too perfect as if someone had been digging around that caught my eye. As someone whose attention detail takes precedence over anything else, on that hot summer night, the oddity of perfection in nature lead me astray.

I settled myself into the scene, poking around the dirt with a twig as if it was an extension of my own digits. This isn't right, I thought to myself. The soil shouldn't be this easy to sift through. As I pulled the stick out of the hole I bore into it with, my eyes widened with fear as a putrid stench filled my nostrils. It was disgusting, it was nauseating; I turned my head to the side out of reflex, gasping for air...

This was the smell of death.

I don't know if any of the following are necessarily "skills", but: I love Crunchyroll, thus I don't care to see people ruin the site for others. I personally know someone on this site who was made awfully frightened by another user (who was subsequently banned), and I found it personally hurtful that this now-banned user made someone else feel that way on this same site which I use on a daily basis. In fact, I didn't even believe it possible before that, that someone you've never met could hold that sort of power over you, but now that I know it can happen I'd like to be able to do as much as I can to prevent it. I also do enjoy seeing others have fun using this site the right ways by reaching out to others with the same hobbies and bonding with them over these without insulting/hurting one another.

Bjaker wrote:

2) What would your moderation style be?

I already moderate a growing group in the CR forums, so I have clear idea of what my moderation style would be: I would participate in the threads the same as I have, and continue being as fun and enjoyable as possible, and I would try my best to use that sort of personable nature to mediate dicey situations (if they were to arise), and would become stern to compete with the issue and the aggressor as they develop. I tend to moderate this way because an initially personable approach will generally keep the rule-following, conscientious users more relaxed, and will be less likely to raise tensions in a way that will disenfranchise these other users or the rule-breakers.

Bjaker wrote:

3) How often do you frequent the official forum categories, and do you post often?

I visit the official forums on a daily basis, but I don't always post in them. With that said, I do post very frequently (ranging from a few dozen to hundred posts per night) in the group I'm a moderator for, though it generally depends on how busy the group's posting is, as well as on my own schedule.

Bjaker wrote:

4) Have you reported inappropriate threads before? If so, how often?

No, I have never reported any inappropriate threads before, but only because I haven't encountered any before which weren't already locked/closed. I'm confident, though, that if I ever did happen on any threads I found inappropriate, that I would definitely report them to the site's moderators. In fact, my group's moderators are part of a secret group where we can discuss anything pertaining the group, and I have made a similar sort of precaution in the secret group where we can alert one another if there's something/someone we should keep a lookout for.

Bjaker wrote:

5) What do you feel is an appropriate amount of time to spend moderating?

I would feel an appropriate amount of time to spend moderating would be as much time as one can enjoy it for. I feel that moderating is something which requires a certain frame of mind, and shouldn't be done too much if you're in a troubled state. If you're making the important decisions which affect other users on the site, then you shouldn't be disgruntled or upset while you do it because you might not make totally fair, just, and unbiased decisions, and that could lead exacerbated situations and issues which are unnecessary.

Bjaker wrote:

6) Aside from Anime, what other hobbies do you have?

Aside from Anime, I also study write stories/novels, and study science and literature. More than anything else, I read classic novels/plays, as well as many from the Ancient and the Medieval/Renaissance periods. I also read a lot of psychology and philosophy, and do pretty much whatever my school friends are getting together to do, which is usually: going to the movies, watching movies at someone's house, playing Magic the Gathering, going to the pool, or warring against one another with modified nerf guns. I also play the violin and harmonica from time to time, sew, and dabble in some painting/computerized graphic design.

Bjaker wrote:

7) What timezone do you live in?

Eastern Standard Time. In other words, I live on the East Coast of the United States.

I noticed that someone else posted for the position who I felt I should make a special mention of. He's the creator of the group I'm a moderator for, and is one of the best suited people for this kind of position which I have ever met. I can't say much for how accurately he answered a lot of these questions, since they're mostly things about his own hobbies or personal opinions on matters, but I can say this: hmm_4x is one of the personable, fair, and active people I've met on this site. Whenever a situation comes up, he answers it immediately, but always in such a way that nobody leaves with hurt feelings. In fact, whenever he mediates a situation, everyone seems to come out of it having a good time and enjoying themselves, and I feel like it's something worth mentioning to you.

1) What skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for this position?

Leadership, Humor and Management.

2) What would your moderation style be?

Honestly depends on what you mean by "style" since it can be taken more than one ways. In any case I am not strict in terms of how users communicate their opinions towards each other, though if I notice a spark that could set of a bomb, I will interefer to insure that spark becomes nothing more, and if possible, something less. I will lock threads that seems to be going off-topic and users are not listening to given warnings; remove spam threads if there ever is any; merge posts by users if they should have two or more posts one after another without another user in between and pay attention to threads that could lead to arguments.

3) How often do you frequent the official forum categories, and do you post often?

Not often. I am actually a quiet person but I do look through the forums at times. Though if I should make it within the moderation team, I will be sure to be active within discussions and as much as possible.

4) Have you reported inappropriate threads before? If so, how often?

I do not think so, not within this community anyway.

5) What do you feel is an appropriate amount of time to spend moderating?

Honestly, I would say as much as an individual can devote into moderating. Though I would suggest longer than at least 1-2 hours. I personally can moderate when ever I am on any form of electronic that has a browser.

6) Aside from Anime, what other hobbies do you have?

Manager of a small indie gaming company that is still within the shadows; moderator of a community created for a sandbox mmo being developed by Forsaken Studios; browsing the web and making connections.

7) What timezone do you live in?

EST

8) If you have any other comments that you feel are necessary and weren't covered in the other questions, you may write them here:

Moderator Application.

1) What skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for this position?

I have a lot of project management experience, degree in business with human resource concentration (so I know how to mediate issues between people. Team building is a skill I have learned, and time management since I have deadlines that I have to meet in order to exceed with my job.

2) What would your moderation style be?

As a moderator, my job would be to keep everything moving forward, without being in the conversation, unless I need to keep it moving, or closing the conversation. If there is a question I do not know an answer to, I would get with someone who knew the answer or find the answer for the posters.

3) How often do you frequent the official forum categories, and do you post often?

Not a lot of time on the forums, but I do post on the anime pages, groups, etc. I think the forums are important to the site.

4) Have you reported inappropriate threads before? If so, how often?

Yes I have, not often because there are not as many that violate the current TOS, but when people do, I do feel the need and responsibility to report them and downgrade the message.

5) What do you feel is an appropriate amount of time to spend moderating?

Depends on the needs of the company, I would say 5 - 10 would be a good amount of time to mod, because of course I would like to still have the time to watch the anime / dramas and work full-time, school full-time... And... did I mention, I am a multitasking person.
6) Aside from Anime, what other hobbies do you have?

7) What timezone do you live in?

CST

8) If you have any other comments that you feel are necessary and weren't covered in the other questions, you may write them here:

1) What skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for this position?
I can type 74 WPM, which is a great advantage to handling a situation when a thread gets heated. I work in the game industry for the past 5 years now. I've been a Forum Moderator, a Customer Support Specialist and now a Community Manager for AAA to budget game titles. I have a understanding of various platform environments, company backend tools as well as multiple message boards systems.

2) What would your moderation style be?
My style of moderation is being a listener or in other words a good reader being able to understand a user concerns and adapt myself towards the person I'm writing too. When their is a dispute between two users I listen to both sides and try to find a middle ground. My goal is to drive towards a healthy community.

3) How often do you frequent the official forum categories, and do you post often?
I've been a Shadow Lurker of the Crunchyroll Forum for quite some time now. So, please don't disqualify me for not having a high post count. I always view the feedback and current users on the forum before posting. Don't like to post right away to just get flames thrown on me. If I was put into the position to bring on more moderators. I would first view their previous post to see how well they react to situations and to be certain their not a troll. You can send me a PM and I can show you post by me on other message boards.

4) Have you reported inappropriate threads before? If so, how often?
The report to moderator feature is great. It can allow some slack off the moderators as it can be a pain finding all the inappropriate threads yourself. Since, I labeled myself as a Shadow Lurker already I haven't brought myself to report post just yet.

5) What do you feel is an appropriate amount of time to spend moderating?
Well, I've managed a moderator team before. So I can understand getting complains from users reporting mod inactivity.
I will be checking the forum through out my entire day, spending most of my time during high volume traffic to the forum.

6) Aside from Anime, what other hobbies do you have?
I enjoy playing games! Mostly PC and some mobile gaming. I'm a big fan of fantasy mmorpgs and cross platform games.
Gaming and Anime go hand and hand the best hobbies to have. Learning how to play the drums will be my next hobby.
Can you count browsing the interwebs a hobby? lol

7) What timezone do you live in?
I live in California / PDT.
