Did you plant a garden this year? What did you plant? Square foot gardening or plot gardening?

My wife and I live in a town house which does not let us have a standard garden. We built a double decker cart 2'x4'. We have tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, strawberries, and a few types of herbs. I am happy that it turned out so well.

Nah, I tried one two years in a row. I realized plants hate me severely :P
Things wouldn't grow, so I'd ask for help, they'd tell me to add one thing, then that one thing would fix one problem and make another, in the end, I was out about 100 dollars and had no veggies :C
I just wanted peppers ;-;

Oh no. One thing you can try: buy a starter plant from a nursery and put it into a large pot. Thats what we did for a few years before I built us the cart.

As of right now, yes. Plot gardening on the perimeter of our backyard.
It's a little stale this year thanks to the weird weather. But we're growing:

-Tomatoes
-Eggplants
-Celery
-Mari Mari peppers (Guyanese pepper)
-Bird peppers
-String beans
-Cucumbers (I think we did anyway)
-Assorted herbs. Primarily Thyme.

Nothing has bear-ed anything yet though since we started late (mid-May).

We were hoping for some spinach plants but our neighbors either hasn't got them yet or doesn't plan on getting them anymore.
I was thinking of adding something new to the mix like strawberries or the mini pumpkins for Halloween/Thanksgiving.

No. If I ever decide to make one, I would like to put a water fountain in the middle. And lots of bushes and fruit trees.

Yup, well more so of just a bunch of trees in my back yard that have fruit and stuff. The people who used to live here planted avocado, apple, banana, and cumquat trees. the only one that tends to consistently grow fruit though is the cumquat and those things are just strange. I still do my best to keep them alive, but I am very talented at killing plants so we will see how this goes.

It's a lot more of a hassle than it seems. At least if you want all the plants to flourish, not just survive. My house is pretty much surrounded by all sorts of vegetable stalks and fruit trees as well as cherry blossom trees out front.

My grandma grew up in a small farming village so she knows pretty much everything about how to make anything grow, as well as the appropriate seasons and stuff to plant or harvest things. It's pretty amazing. Just preparing the soil is a lot of work. Here, since it's dry, you must make sure there's enough moisture in the ground and you have to make sure the soil is suitable before you can even sow seeds or dig holes for saplings. You have to spend a lot of effort turning the hard soil and removing large clumps of rocky matter and moving aside stones. And then we have to buy a bunch of bags of fertilizer and combine this with the soil that I just turned and mix it all. And since plants eat up the nutrients, we have to repeat this soil-and-fertilizer mixing every couple of months to ensure that stuff grows. And then there's the problem with pests and plant diseases and old stalks that have to be removed because they don't yield any more.

We keep a bucket in the kitchen where we toss leftover food and drink, eggshells and vegetable and fruit and meat trimmings. Pretty much anything organic goes into the bucket and we dump it in a specially prepared area in the backyard under a big plastic sheet every night.
