The problem with word censoring is that it is regularly a lose-lose situation. Either it will be easy to bypass for those that regularly spout such immature language, or it will be too sensitive a system and will regularly interrupt normal discussion. That's especially a problem in a niche where there's many fictious words or words that aren't common in standard socializing. A system that is too sensitive is going to make it annoying to discuss even Attack on ***an, because tits. And one that does too little is entirely ineffective in accomplishing its goal.

The censor route punishes the innocent in both cases. Don't choose that route.

It's just up to the tech guys to further enhance the moderators' tools, and maybe yet further increase the moderator totals. That's the only solution to have the highest chance of pleasing most parties.

An additional point, since it has been established that some specific group decided to go out of their way for bullying, I believe racism isn't really the topic at hand (unless it's a group that specifically focuses on race). Such ill people would speak just as hatefully regardless of race. Though I wasn't there to witness (Denver Comic Con was the same time frame).

You'd probably have to have the comments filtered/reviewed by someone prior to posting to achieve what you're aiming for. Like the slight tape delay you get when watching live TV. That'd probably take a ton of mods to actually do though.

If there's no prerequisite to post a comment, and your only intent is to troll someone, it'd be nothing to create an account and get your racist/offiensive comment posted. Get banned, create another account, rinse and repeat. So long as whatever they want to say actually gets posted and seen by someone the job will be accomplished. An influx of trolls is going to make it impossible to actually rid such a thing. You'd likely have more trolls posting than moderators can ban/delete comments.

It'd be nice to be able to rid such a thing, but the internet will probably always be a beacon for racism and trolling, and you'd probably never totally rid of it unless you took some overboard dictatorship stance with it.

Best advice OP would be to let it roll of your shoulders and keep on going.

It's a shame a group of people try to ruin it for everyone else. I personally enjoy the live feeds, as i feel like it makes me a part of what's going on when I can't be there. Same sort of thing happened last event i watched too. I hope they get this worked out because i really enjoy this feature and wouldn't want them to remove it. I just don't like seeing people talk like that though.

Putting censor filters may help but it wont completely stop the problems. There are often ways people may get around the filters, and even though these derogatory words may not be spelled correctly, it doesn't matter as the meaning of the word is still intact. if CR does try to add filters they need to be wary of these bypasses. One example is using a lower-case L in place for a capital i and visa-versa, they look the same.

Even with filters people can still say insulting or rude things... I don't see an end to this anyhow.

CR could do what some sites do and make it to where you need to confirm your identity through an email address? I know its a hassle but it would prevent so many alternate accounts, and the ability to make new accounts faster.

I'm sorry that these people said to you what they did UtapriStarish. . .

Its good to see that CR has at least recognized that there was a problem and is searching for a solution. It is too sad to see how people can be so quick to belittle another just based off of what they look like.

I feel terrible just reading your post. Just so you're aware not only are we planning to censor the live stream, but we're also working on getting more moderators so things like this doesn't happen again. Most of those users were from another site. Someone thought it would be funny to make a thread on a different site, telling users to come to Crunchyroll's live stream to troll. We IP banned them, and deleted their accounts. Again, I feel terrible for what happened. Usually the live chat is a much calmer place, where users and cosplayers interact in a fun way.

I did not watch much of the live stream because of this very reason.
In the three minutes I watched part of the live stream I saw at least forty racial slurs and personal insults directed at the cosplayers and just had to turn it off.

I highly doubt they were real active members of these forums though since I have spent a long time here and genuinely believe the CR community is one of the nicest I have come across.

As the mods surmised it was probably a group of people from another site(4chan most likely, god I hate those assholes) using throwaway accounts to troll people.
Since it was a live stream it will likely be very hard to censor such things, but it is nice to know the mods are really trying their best to get rid of these people.

Suggestion: What about making it so new accounts cannot post on live streams until a week has passed? That would help curb some of the abuse right there.

I sincerely apologize for any slight incurred.

There is no excuse we can make on our side, but what I can tell you is that we were the victim of a group of users who went out of their way to slander those attending the convention.

Our moderators were active in the live stream banning these individuals and doing our best to keep them from creating new accounts / continuing their attacks.

Our engineers are working on ways to make sure this does not happen again in the future.

Again, my sincerest apologies.

EDIT: Anyone who trolls this thread will be dealt with appropriately. Please think before you post.

This makes me feel terrible. People can be so cruel -.- I'm sorry you had to go through that. Try not to let it bother you though. Easier said than done, I'm sure, but I think it's awesome you cross play and such. You have more courage than I do I'm too scared to cosplay lol. Keep enjoying what you do.

As for a solution I do kindof agree with only letting premium members chat in it. You could watch it as an nonpaying member, but only allow the paying ones to comment perhaps. Like others have stated, people who pay more than likely wont troll or do things to get banned. Word filtering can end up awkward like a previous poster stated :/

Whatever ends up happening I hope it gets solved. I don't like seeing others get hurt or bullied or harassed.

I agree with premium members are only allowed to comment, and regular members can only watch, This could be at least a temporary solution if nothing else.
I am also very sorry this has happened to you UtapriStarish

While the internet - and the world, may be filled with them, it doesn't excuse this sort of behavior. A site like Crunchyroll should be a place where people feel safe to be themselves without having racial slurs slung at them and negative comments. It's okay to disagree with someone, it's another to be a bigot.

They are just jealous of you. Don't be upset. Remember that you have nothing to feel worse off about.

I never said it was.
I didn't mean to come off as a bigot either, it's just a fact.
