I'm spending way too much time with Animal Crossing: New Leaf that it's sucking the life energy right out from me

Got the first copy of New Leaf at my local Game Stop store on the day it launched here in North America. Sunk nearly 100 hours into it so far, so I know what you mean. Lol.

What is this game and why am I hearing so many good things about it? Interested in trying it out but if it's anything like The Sims then not worth my time.

It's kind of hard to explain with just a few words. ^_^

If you need to give it a trial run, maybe you could watch some videos, or maybe you could buy a copy of an older game and give that a shot.

A video would be a good idea, but how about trying to explain with more than a few words?

Tch, fine. Be that way.

The Animal Crossing series is a series of life-simulation games in which you move into a town with fairly little money and you have to start to live a very fictional life. It is similar to the "The Sims" games only through the "simulation" genre.

The general gist of the series starts you off on a train, taxi, bus, etc., on your way to your new town. On this vehicle, you meet a cat, named Rover. Rover asks you a series of questions such as "Can I sit next to you?", "What's your name?", "To where are you moving?" and he gives you the opportunity to be either rude or friendly. Your replies to these questions generally dictate the outcome of the way your face looks, as well as, of course, your name and the name of the town where you are moving to.

Once you get off of the vehicle, you are normally greeted at the entrance to town by a man--or, rather, raccoon--named Tom Nook. Tom Nook runs the local convenience store, but he's also the town real estate agent. Tom asks you to look around town for one of four empty houses (normally containing only an empty cardboard box, candle/lamp and radio). You can look through these houses and then you can choose which one you'd like to start your life in. Once you've made a decision, he asks you to pay for the house--usually costing about 19,800 "bells"--the currency in the game--but you don't have enough. You usually start with 1,000 bells. When you can't pay for it, he always comes up with the brilliant idea of giving you a part-time job. The part-time job is actually just a series of little jobs--such as meeting people, delivering products to customers, and finding landmarks--that acts as the game's tutorial. After you complete 6-7 of these little requests, Tom takes off an additional 1,200 bells or so from what you owe and then sets you free. Shortest. Job. Ever.

After that, you're on your own. You can do practically anything that you want. You can go talk to your neighbors (who will always be animals, by the way) and on the first day you play, they'll probably just give you little hints about the game, but from the next day onward, they'll start asking you for favors, giving you nicknames, giving you random clothes to wear, and furniture to decorate your house with. You can send letters to your neighbors (who will always write you back, and if you send them a gift with their letter, they'll send one right back with a gift).

On to botany. I haven't played this newest game, but in the previous 3 games, there were 10 different kinds of trees in total--plain, cedar, orange, cherry, peach, pear, apple, coconut, money, and golden. They all take four days to grow fully (note that these are real days, this game is a real-time game).

The regular and cedar trees are fun, because you can shake them and random stuff may or may not fall out. If you shake these money and furniture may fall out, which you can then collect. Be careful, though--a beehive may fall out as well. If you get stung, you get this nasty-looking swelling over one of your eyes, and you have to buy medicine to fix it. It just looks nasty, it doesn't effect your game.

Fruit trees always bear three fruit every three days. You'll always have a local fruit when you first start your town. This local fruit can be found on trees right after you move in. They sell at Tom Nook's shop for 100 bells. Foreign fruit, on the other hand, sell for 500 bells apiece. You can make new fruit trees by simply burying a piece of fruit with a shovel. They also take 4 days to grow fully.

Money trees and golden trees...well, explaining those may spoil some things, so I won't.

Flowers exist too. You can by them from Tom Nook, cheaply. Putting two similar breeds of flowers together may result in more flowers through fertilization--you can even cross-breed flowers! For instance, if you put a red and white rose next to each other, you might get some pink roses out of it. Rare flowers that can be made only by cross-breeding may sell fairly high. You have to make sure to maintain your flowers with a watering can, or they'll die.

Speaking of shovels and watering cans, there are lots of tools you can use in these games. You can dig up holes and bury stuff with the shovel. You can catch bugs with the net. You can catch fish with the fishing rod. You can cut down trees with the axe, which is breakable. You can water flowers with the watering can. You can shoot down special gifts that are tied to balloons with a slingshot, and you can set alarms with the timer.

As time goes on, seasons change (real-time), and when they change, the bugs and fish that are available change. You could get a bunch of cicadas and dragonflies in the fall, while you can catch honeybees and butterflies primarily in the spring. You can either sell these bugs to Tom Nook, you can let them go, or you can donate them to the museum, to make your town more reputable.

The more nice-looking and reputable your town is, the more neighbors will move in, and the more often special visitors will come to town. There are a lot of recurring special visitors, so I'm not going to explain them here.

Geez...I'm getting sick of typing. If you want to know more, just tell me. This is probably about 1/10th of the total game's contents, if that. The newer game may have more, I dunno.
