I was curious to know what people think of this whole controversy around a Cheerios commercial involving an interracial couple. How do you feel about it and why? Personally I didn't even realize there was an issue with it but I can't believe it is as bad as it is. I have no issue with it at all and really am kind of disappointed by the response it has been getting. Even though I know racism is still out there and all that but just on such a wide scale I find it sad.

Here is the story which also has the commercial: freep.com/article/20130603/BUSINESS07/306030107/cheerios-mixed-race-biracial-commercial

After all these years? It's sad to see a lot of people won't move on.
I personally thought the ad was adorable. ♥

Honestly the only source cited for the reaction to the commercial is the internet, which make this kind of a stupid news story. There are many worse things you can find on the internet. They could put together a whole day block of news on the offensive qualities of 4ch. It's just millions people saying stupid things because they can.

Personally I don't think there's a single thing wrong with the commercial. So what if the mom's white and the dad's black.... racism is pretty stupid.

The fact that this is even controversial confuses me. I hope it's just mostly internet trolls causing the controversy. It's 2013, not the 1700s or heck the first half of the last century.

At the end of the day... Cheerios are still delicious and I will eat them regardless. Especially with banana pieces in it.

What is the real source of the controversy? The commercial with an interracial couple or the people that were bothered enough to talk about it?

I might get some hate for this, but I found the ad a little offensive. Cheerio's contain byproducts of wheat and gluten, which people have been hoodwinked into believing is healthy for you, and as such, should be consumed by no one; regardless of race or gender.

Shhhh. The haters will come for you.

_ _ Commercial was cute. Who cares what the couple looks like? Society can keep its mouth shut, people love who they love, done. Whoever had a problem with this needs to remember their common sense and keep their low IQ to themselves before they kill off everybody's brain cells trying to explain themselves. I don't even want to read the story. _ _

I don't see the big deal, just people out there being stupid trying to make a big deal.

So, it's not the ad but the product you're offended by? There are so many products out there that fudge their facts in order to get people to buy their products, and people believe them, because they're too lazy to do their own research.

As far as the ad itself goes, people's reaction to an interracial commercial is just ridiculous, but you can't stop them. I applaud commercials that don't try to be safe and friendly, because it's just not realistic to hide things like interracial couples or even gay couples. To be honest, I didn't like the I'm a Mormon ads, but instead of going on the internet and complaining about the ads, I ignored them and moved on with my life. Some people are just so worried about being keeping everything as morally safe as possible, that when people go outside the boundaries, people who are offended flip out more than they should. Granted, that doesn't mean you should keep quiet about the things that do offend you, I just think people are choosing the wrong things to be offended by and are complaining about them when they could just move on. I've seen things that I don't agree with, but just scroll down and move on. Or, if the ad is on TV, just change the channel for a moment. We shouldn't have to censor every little thing because a few people are offended by it. I will say there is a point when some ads go over board and everybody will find them offensive, but I appreciate when people take risks rather than playing it safe.

I've been waiting for interracial couples to show up in advertising for years. I think it's a good indicator that racial bigotry is becoming such a dinosaur that it is no longer a threat to selling mundane products.

What I find the most interesting about this situation is that the commercial wasn't made to be a stunt - that little girl was just super adorable and so they hired actors that could reasonably be her parents.
