Five years is a long time. But looking just at completed TV series from 2008 to now,

1. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (I know people have problems with this anime; I'm not exactly sure why, but in any case it was an extremely positive force both for anime viewers and for the industry as a whole).

2. Bakemonogatari (a great example of why I love this thing called anime).

3. Eden of the East (an all-around superb character-driven mystery story).

4. God's Memo Pad (won against Durarara!! and Humanity has Declined).

5. Money of Soul and Possibility Control (for being so damned unusual).

Higashi no Eden would top it for me.

Actual usage of a native English speaker, although Ika Musume did but... it wasn't a "serious" anime.

Hmm, let's try and make those very tired braincells work then :P

Kuroko no Basket
It's the anime I've watched the most times, 7-10 times.

Toradora! (2008, 5 years ago right)
Second most watched, 5 times I think.

Steins;Gate
3rd most watched. Though only twice. It wasn't that good the second time, guess it''s becaus I wouldn't get surprised by the twists.

Clannad: After Story (2008)
Actually this in the 3rd most watched for me, since I rewatched it twice in a row. I didn't understand it the first time, and it was so great :P

Space Brothers
Slow paced done so very right.
Great characters, and actually is exciting.

fate/zero
spice & wolf
clannad: after story
steins;gate
hataraku maou-sama!/oregairu (tie. can't really choose between the two. and yes, I'm aware they're currently airing, but that doesn't change the fact that they're both something that's a breath of fresh air, and are exactly what anime needed.)

I love you guys. I mean, right, top anime releases that come to mind from the last 5 years (in no particular order)...

- Eden of East (2008) (shocker right?)
- Bakemonogatari (2009)
- Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009-2010)
- Steins; Gate (2011)
- Fate/Zero (2011-2012)

I tried to include a series from every year. Although, I'm sure that if I thought about this more and took a lot of things into consideration, my list may or may not have changed. Regardless, these five came to me at the time.
