The title is very self explanitory. What are your favorite types of protagonist to watch and why?

If you are confused about the question here are a few examples to help you out

Maybe you like the typical shonen protagonist who never gives up and is always going on about friendship and such.
Or the typical protagonist who gets dragged into a situation and learns to deal (or not) with said situation
Maybe you like that powerful badass protagonist that can mess you up nine different ways to Sunday. (Kenshiro and Hyoubu Kyousuke are good examples)
Or maybe you like them bishies

I personally like the protagonists who are wimpy and or pathetic. The types who are too scared or confused to do anything. Shinji Ikari and Yukiteru Amano I'm looking at you two. My reasoning for this is that they are highly realistic and just hilarious to watch. Also those rare few moments when they loose it and kill is one of the most awesome things to watch in my opinion.

The kind with a rock solid mentality and moral compass without being a pretentious pain in the ass.

This often intersects with "the rule of cool" characters, but not always.

So...

Guts from Berserk.
Batou from Ghost in the Shell.
Mikiya Kokutou from Kara no Kyoukai.
Nanashi from Sword of the Stranger.
Spike from Cowboy Bebop.
Keigo Oonishi from Texhnolyze.
Kamina from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
Black Gold Saw from Black Rock Shooter.
Alice from Heaven's Notepad.
L from Death Note.
Meme Oshino from Bakemonogatari.
Alucard from Hellsing Ultimate.
Integra from Hellsing Ultimate.
Walter from Hellsing Ultimate.
Alexander Anderson from Hellsing Ultimate.
Yang Wenli from Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
Reinhard von Lohengramm from Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
Etc.

Since protagonists usually need to be more fallible these guys usually show up as supporting characters. But that also means that if they're in a protagonist role and the story didn't fall on its face then it's probably worth looking into.

ones who aren't wishy-washy dumbasses. it doesn't really matter to me if they're strong physically or not, as long as they know what they want and will actually work towards their goals, instead of meandering around for 10-20 episodes just being a twit.

I'd need to finish Fate/Zero first, but I'd be more likely to say Tokiomi Tohsaka, Maiya Hisau, or Assassin. The fault with Saber comes out during the Three Kings discussion in episode 11, and I found Kiritsugu to be way too self-destructive in his willingness to sacrifice anything to achieve the Grail. But I haven't watched most of the first season, and I saw the second season in three distinct pieces, so I'd have to watch the whole thing through cohesively to really form an idea.

You didnt put the spoiler tags around it -_-

Anyway my favorite type would either be the extremely confident type of characters or calm and collected characters.

I honestly think it's weird that people would prefer a strong, no fear, a-1 pwnage hero character over a character with weakness, vulnerability, or has a tendency to be a little bitch at least sometimes.

There's nothing interesting about the former at all. With the latter there's room for growth...a potential for interesting interaction. This is why I'm always going to be in Shu's camp.

I love hero's who are just not cut out to be heroic at all at first, and come face to face with a difficult problem forcing them to make a difficult decision that is way over their heads before they are ready to that leads to a proverbial "growing up" at some point in the series where they finally become the badass they need to be. It makes watching an anime a more personal experience, as the hero cuts down the bad guy you think to yourself "Man, I was there when he was a gimp". It's like you're their friend from way back. I don't know, that's how I think.
