I honestly think it's weird that people would prefer a strong, no fear, a-1 pwnage hero character over a character with weakness, vulnerability, or has a tendency to be a little bitch at least sometimes.

There's nothing interesting about the former at all. With the latter there's room for growth...a potential for interesting interaction. This is why I'm always going to be in Shu's camp.

I definitely wouldn't intend to say either one is better than the other. It depends on how the story is supposed to relate to the audience and draw them in, ultimately. And they're both equally difficult to get done right. But I often find myself wanting to look up to a lead character, not have them dragged down to my level, like so many current ones seem to be.

After awhile it just feels like a cheap gimmick.

So at this particular moment I'm a bit adverse to it, just as a sort of personal preference.

And you can still put those kinds of characters through hell, as well. Guts underwent considerable change in Berserk between his mercenary days and becoming one of the commanders of The Band of the Hawk (and after). Most of Spike's development happened before Cowboy Bebop, but you still get to see how his decisions shaped his character.

The best ones are those who have to struggle with the challenges they face because of their ideals; like Nanashi struggling with his past in Sword of the Stranger leading up to the climactic moment when he finally discovers a cause for which he can draw his sword. Or the immense emotional weight shouldered by Alice in Heaven's Memo Pad.

Both archetypes can be played well or poorly, and I'd rather a good protagonist of any type rather than a bad one with superficial similarities to particular tropes I personally feel drawn to, but these kinds of character who persevere through even the most trying ordeals without compromising or turning aside are ones I can look up to.

And I often think that these characters have more believable weaknesses and vulnerabilities in the end.

Instead of the "generic shonen protagonist model" we've seen so much of lately.

But a standard trip down the hero's journey isn't too bad either; I still like a lot of those protagonists.

Character's who aren't bitches. By this I mean characters who can think for themselves.

Gintoki from Gintama
Spike from Cowboy Bebop
Kyon from Haruhi
The main character girl from Shin Sekai Yori (forgot her name)
Kinji from Hidan no Aria
Yuuji from Shana
Ayumu from Kore wa Zombie desu ka
Both Yoshino and Mahiro from Zetsuen no Tempest
Ed from FMA
Mutta from Space Bros
Tiger from Tiger & Bunny
and surprisingly, Naruto.
The list goes on , if a character can show resolve and initiative I really like them

Characters I hate : Idealists and whiners.
Kira from Gundam Seed
Haruyuki from Accel World
Haruto from Valvrave
Suzaku from Code Geass
Pretty much anyone who is either a wuss / whiner, or won't do the logical/practical thing because it goes against some idealistic morals.

True.

And ultimately it all depends on the story; watching everyone in Hellsing kicking ass has its perks too. And then there's the ones that do both sides pretty well, like TTGL. Or other series that use a wider cast of disparate character types.

Edit:

And I totally agree that seeing that final transformation from wimp to badass can be amazing.

Like waiting however many years for this kid's balls to drop:

I just don't want achieving badass status to be the end of the story though. It should just be the beginning!

Third is a bunch of Type-Moon heroines,

Alphard and Canaan from Canaan (left/center).
Saber from the Fate series (to the top left).
Shiki from Kara no Kyoukai (right, wearing the kimono).
Arcueid Brunestud from Tsukihime (top center).
And the cute little thing at the bottom is Liang Qi from Canaan (anthropomorphized).

Fourth Nono from Diebuster and Noriko Takaya from Gunbuster.

And fifth is Ritsuko Akagi and Misato Katsuragi from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
