But honestly, I've always been drawn to the dark/loner type of protagonists...Haruhi Suzumiya...

This made me lol for a good minute but Haruhi as a dark loner??! I think me and you have been watching two completely different Haruhis!

This is the one I'm talking about. Yes she's dark, not all the times, and she has a depressing train of thought... hence the title, "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya".

Well if you want to put it in a technical point of view then yeah?
I just saw her as Kyon did. Overly hyper active and unstable (Considering her whole godly power business) for no apparent reason

d at the train crossing. That conversation made me realise how dark her personality is.
And also the dream episode where those giant blue men appear.

Hmmmm. Well maybe I was just viewing everything too lightly but I did think the movie was rather depressing. But she was barely in it. Meh go figure

The believable protagonist, eg shinji ikari because he has a very believable reaction to everything, etc etc

*jumping into Haruhi Suzumiya discussion*
That's actually an interesting line of thought. I had always thought of her like KingOfHeroess said, but then when I was revisiting the series recently, I started to see more of that side of her... reading what GayAsianBoy said just now, yeah, I agree with that.
That's actually similar to how I think of Grell from Black Butler (who is my favorite character ever, by the way). The loud, extreme personality is a cover over real insecurity and sadness. Though with Grell, it's more of a "I'll reject you before you reject me" (which includes getting really flirty to the point of bothering people - it's still putting up a mask over the vulnerability). You can tell that Grell is really smart, though - she did build a chainsaw in a time before they were actually invented (look at how she talks about it in ep. 5 - it's not just something picked up from whatever anachronism bin the mobsters in the first vol. got their cell phones from). And I think the reaper world and it's strict uniformity is to Grell what high school and the idea of average life is to Haruhi (and many other characters - see shows like Flowers of Evil, and more that I can't think of right now, but that's a common concept).

tl:dr about Ciel and Lelouch:

I also like:
~ Really positive, cheerful characters like Cardcaptor Sakura, Sora Naegino from Kaleido Star, Marika from Bodacious Space Pirates, I think Birdy from Birdy the Mighty: Decode also counts (wow, that show is a tearjerker though).
~ I don't really know how to describe it, but it's the traits in common between Maoh from MAOYU and Sora from Oh! Edo Rocket. Like... she's really smart/she knows what's going on, but she acts sort of out-of-it in a way... sort of like Lau from Black Butler does (watch him in episode 4, he totally knows who Jack the Ripper is, he's probably covering for them). Except on a cheery, positive girl, not a... gangster dude.
~ Adorable male leads of a certain type - Yuuri from Kyo Kara Maoh, Yusha from MAOYU, Maou from The Devil is a Part Timer, Romeo from Romeo x Juliet (who isn't a Maou, nor is he married to one, unless you believe what his father says about Juliet).
~ Speaking of Romeo x Juliet, I recently read vol. 10 of the manga Dawn of the Arcana, and the main character Nakaba reminds me of Juliet so much! I want there to be an anime and I want it to get licensed by FUNi and for Brina Palencia to play her.

I love this forum. i like the strong ppl type & the idiot protagonist. my second favorite protagonist is emotionless protagonist like shizuka from my little monster....

I wouldn't call her emotionless, it's just that she's not able to express her emotions very well. Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion is another great example of this type of character and Yuuki Nagato from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a third.

v Have you seen SNAFU? I think you'd enjoy that.

i seen two episodes the main girl with black hair, is one of them that cant express emotion well.

You lost me at 'protagonist'.

Seriously though, while I will always asserts that an ensemble cast will always deliver a more interesting story than a single protagonist, when there is a main character, for it to be interesting to me, that character needs to develop during the story . I'm very much turned off by characters who begin the story already competent, self-assured, and popular. My ideal protagonist starts off as wimpy or whiny or lazy or what-have-you, and deals with their flaws as part of the plot.

I don't really have any specific favorite, so I'll just settle with saying that I like the quirky, unconventional types.

I like the laid-back, stoic yet when she/he gets into action they are feckin bad-asses types, my favourite being:
Spike Spiegal from Cowboy Bebop
Mugen from Samurai Champloo
Dr. Stein from Soul Eater
Alucard from Hellsing
Gildarts from Fairy Tail
L from Deathnote
Jin from Samurai Champloo
Re-l Mayer from Ergo Proxy

well i know this falls in the typical shonen but think Natsu Dragneel is badass i know he uses same powers for minor fights but any fan of fairy tail will know for major arc fight he never uses the same uber special move twice lol and that to me is cool
