I will attempt to make it to episode 9 of Gurren Lagann, skipping 4-f if I must. I am trying to finish 4 but it makes Valvrave look like an intellectual show. Yes, I know Valvrave is dumb but so far it seems like a parody so I excuse it. Is GL a parody of 70s and 80s combining mecha shows?

What I'm sure to watch almost always same day as simulcast:
Saturday or Sunday: Attack on Titan
Sunday: The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W!
Monday: Flowers of Evil
Thursday: My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU
Friday: The Devil is a Part-timer, Chihayafuru 2
Saturday: Space Brothers, Oreimo, The Severing Crime Edge

What I've been watching regularly but with no enthusiasm, so I sometiimes let them slip a day or few:
Monday: Arata the Legend, Hayate the Combat Butler: Cuties
Tuesday: Sparrow's Hotel, AIURA
Wednesday: RDG: Red Data Girl
Thursday: Naruto Shippuden, Majestic Prince
Friday: Valvrave the Liberator
Saturday: Muromi-san
??: Date A Live (I never remember what day this is available, but eventually I remember about it and watch--which reminds me...I haven't watched the latest episode yet)

There are a few shows I've been dipping into from time to time, but not on any kind of regular schedule

New shows (Spring 2013) that I started but dropped:
Karneval, Zettai Boei Leviatan, Samurai Bride, Devil Survivor 2, Photo Kano, Yuyushiki, Mushibugyo

I'd say it's more of an extremely over-the-top homage than a parody.. it takes itself a little too seriously, IMO. but then again, I thought the same thing of valvrave, so if you look at that as a parody, maybe you'll see gurren lagann as the same.

Did anyone else notice that they had the two girls from Diebuster in the onsen?

There is a big twist in GL early in the show that kind of sets the mood of the entire show. It is somewhat comical at time, but IMO the show as a whole is much more serious than it is funny. As for it being a parody, I could see how you could see that, but I didn't really notice it until you said something

I watched most of 4-8 and the start of 9 of Gurren Lagann today. While 4 was the worst of the bunch I still have a ton of problems even with 8, in fact especially with episode 8. The good thing about me seeing episode 8 is that I understand where Vividred Operation ripped off their

Thanks a lot for the encouragement though! I did get 4 episodes further in it today including what is, if not perfect in many, so many ways, at least is a very iconic episode in anime so I am glad to have watched episode 8 anyways. Will see if I get the urge to finish episode 9 and go further or not. No burning desire though. The overall point of the show just isn't all that great in my mind.
Again, sorry... Will have to post this in the anime you wanted to love but couldn't thread.

hey, at least you gave it a try. that's what counts. myself, I haven't really watched that show in years so I may be remembering it more fondly than I would think of it now. I know my tastes certainly have changed since then, and it's definitely not a show for everybody.
