Many CR users know that the site started out with links to fansubbed titles. I know that they went legit during Fall '08. But I don't remember (besides possible powerful lawyers) what it was that stopped the site from being shut down (like what a U.S. District Court did to MegaUpload last year).

It's been a few years since I listened to the ANNCast episode "Yes We Kun" that interviews Kun Gao, a founder of CR, but I do remember Kun does talk about this type of issue.

There are many that do know and many that don't is perhaps what I should have put.

I knew of the site back then and had no interest in it. I'm glad they decided to go legit, I've been a happily paying member for the better part of a year now and have no plans to quit anytime soon.

I can't say I really knew the old CR as well as most people. I mostly Googled for series and found them then, but I found CR a few years ago, but didn't get active until around 2 years ago, right around when I joined.

At least by the time I found CR (spring 2008, as I recall), they didn't simply post links, they hosted all the content themselves. This is what made them different than the other fansub sites, but was also a big factor in them eventually going legit. With the cost of hosting content, trying to support it with ads on a site that hosted illegal content simply was not going to turn a profit.

Fortunately, hosting all that content themselves also made them very popular (no dead links), and one of the most important factors for a website is the number of visitors it attracts. Of course, a large number of viewers abandoned the site when they went legit (dropping from almost every title you could name to just a handful), but they plugged away and succeeded where others have either failed to thrive or failed entirely.

What kept them from getting shut down before they went legit is effectively the same thing that keeps the fansub sites running now; it wasn't worth the effort. Unless financial compensation can be obtained, shutting down a fansub site involves spending money just to cut off one source of people pirating your content; effectively a game of wack-a-mole. At best, you are making it more inconvenient, and without a legit alternative at the time, there is little benefit to it. As I recall, CR also had a policy of only posting unlicensed titles, although I don't know how effectively this was enforced. I do know that almost anything licensed by Funimation was pulled in short order. This would also have made them less of a target than sites that post licensed content.

yea, I knew about it back when it first started because fan-subbers used to complain about how CR would make paid subscriptions for people to watch what those groups subbed for free. or something. it's been a long time. I'm glad CR became what it is now, though.

Yeah I remember that, and the one piece vs naruto always had holy may, eudd or tripad going nuts with the bashing. Soon the 'please dont bash me' at the end of the posts started being added rofl. Good times...

Sigh... It is so nice talking to a person who knows of the past.

fun fact: eudd actually likes naruto

I also think the essay writing originated in that thread >.>

Same for me as well. Crunchyroll usually popped up when I was looking for stuff but I didn't want to bother with it. When I say that it changed I was surprised. Now look at me
