It adds more opportunity for believable plot twists. Like in the Night Angel series books. It makes characters somewhat irrational ya know?

And here I thought only I read that series.

They aren't necessary, but if they are done right they can be an interesting plot point.

Just finished it! So good right? I mean that whole ending with the lovey dovey ness was like whaaat but still gave me the feels right? hahah

No. In actual fact, I'm tired of characters falling in love with the nearest character to them.

I love Final Fantasy 13 for the reason that the protagonist, "Lightning", doesn't have a love interest. And it wasn't a love story.

Not really. A lot of times, it's killing a good series.
I'm not reading the manga, but I think they will ruin Shingeki if they're gonna push the Mikasa x Eren.

Plenty of anime that I've watched haven't had any sort of love interest, so I don't think it's really needed. Do I enjoy having that in a show though? Yeah, I won't say no to it.

Ghost in The Shell for example doesn't really have any of that. The major is a yuri but as far as I know they never really go into that part of her besides a few occasional glances. Batou I guess could be said to be in love with the major but it's never overly expressed or explored.

In the words of Patches O'houlihan:

"Necessary? Is it... necessary for me to drink my own urine? No. But I do it anyway, because it's sterile and I like the taste!"

Love interests aren't strictly necessary, but they do add more of an impetus for the protagonist to succeed in his/her trials, and as long as they're a well-developed / likable character in their own right, they're fine. Adds more to the plot, gives shippers something (though I hate shipping for the most part), and provides a more fleshed-out universe.

Satellite love interests on the other hand... bleegh.
