Alright so where I do have friends who do like anime i have many friends and relatives who do not understand what anime is and actually completely have the wrong idea. one of my bff's thinks that anime is only porn based and is just evil and she will never ever watch it (though what is strange is the few anime i have shown her she likes but will only watch when no one else is around really) and then i get a bunch of them always saying "Oh like pokemon isn't that like for kids?" then i try to explain an anime like high school of the dead and their like ....... ........ Then of course i have friends who have only watched one anime and think all anime is like that... as much as Naruto is an anime it is not how all anime are... yeah...

so i'm just wandering how all have you explained anime to your friends and relatives or have you failed just as i have.

is there any hope for non-otaku to understand us at all?

Updated: realize I misspelled a few things

I have a hard time explaining anime to people who like anime, let alone people who don't.

My mom still thinks all anime is like Speed Racer (and the dub at that), while my dad sees it more like cartoons. My cousin is a fan of the 'big three', and that's about everyone I can think of who even has an opinion.

Yeah I have a hard time explaining anime sometimes. Not many people around here are into anime at all, so it can be an uphill battle.

My dad used to be willing to watch them with me when I was younger, but he was never super into them. Looking back on it, he probably just watched them to get some of that "father/son bonding" time in. He would never watch them by himself.

My brother is a person I can talk about anime with though. He isn't an Otaku or anything but he watches the occasional show. He also used to watch Toonami back in the day, when Gundam Wing and DBZ were the big shows. I talked him into watching SAO a few weeks ago and he loved it. Lately I've been trying to get him to watch Attack on Titan but he hasn't gotten around to watching it yet. Like most people, he's the kind of guy I think that when he starts an anime he'll like it, it's just a matter of talking him into watching it.

EDIT: Added something.

A very good question. I'll let you know when I figure out that important inquiry because like you, I've just crashed and burned!

Hell even with people who watch anime I go down shamefully haha

With my friends/family I never make it past the word 'anime' without them laughing at me. So I don't even have the chance to explain.

lol, I don't try to explain it anymore, I just say it is my thing, I like it, enough said. Either you like it or you don't.

If they can't respect you for that, they're not your friends,

if your family can't respect you for that, tell them at least you're not out getting girls pregnant, doing drugs or murdering people... that argument usually shuts them up.

I never had to explain since I never came across the need to explain (meaning I've never came in contact of a friend or relative while watching anime to explain it). But if I did, I would just explain the what it was I was watching instead of anime in general. They would just think it was a cartoon anyway so I'm not going to fight that battle of saying it's something else lol.

My girlfriend doesn't understand that not all anime is ecchi or involving men who grunt for five minutes before throwing a punch. She won't even give it a shot

None of my friends or family (my sister kind of does and my friend's brother) understands when I try to explain. No matter what I do, they keep calling it "cartoon porn".

I can't really talk about anime in real life to anyone except my sister sometimes and my friend's brother... kinda lame.

I get that a lot. "Why do you still watch cartoons like a little kid?"
"Why do you still read picture books?"

My response is... I ignore those comments, brushed them over my shoulders like a fallen leaf.

It's a matter of over explanation, I think. Face value of Japanese animation for many people is fare for children, pornography, incoherent plotting, guilty pleasure, "Chinese cartoons", and many other rather baseless claims and dismissals.

I'd recommend not condescending to non-anime fans just because their comprehension of its so-called depths aren't up to the standards of hardened otaku. Don't feel in such dire need to spread this gospel of cultural art to everyone, because not everyone will accept it, and it has to be that way. If everyone liked it, it would lose the appeal of obscurity it lends to itself by being so different as to not be readily understood by everyone.

My cousin and I don't bother explaining the stuff we watch to our siblings, we realize they will never understand unless they watch it. As a result, we can always get a good laugh out of it.
