I wouldn't have suggested HotD as a first choice to represent anime as being a bigger medium than children's cartoons. Mainly because it is overtly perverse and might reinforce the notion that all anime is hentai.

I only remember two 'recent' anime films that came to the States could give a fair representation of what anime has to offer;
Spirited Away and Steamboy
It's a nice place to start to introduce people into a new medium, since everyone should be able to appreciate a movie. I'm sure you can also think of several older films too.

If I were to give a genuine definition of what is anime, I would say, maybe not in these exact words;
Anime is simply just Japanese animation. Its genre ranges as much as any book or movie would, with target audience reaching from children to adults, or simple stories to thought provoking ones. However, like any other medium, there are several popular genres. Common ones we all know; fantasy, action, romcoms, sci-fi, and so on. Other genres that 'you' might not be familiar with that is unique to anime, mecha, magical girl, ecchi, and hentai. The latter two being perverse and porn. Anime also have a genre name to categorize their shows to their target audience, such as shonen as shows targeted towards teenage boys, and shojo as shows targeted towards teenage girls... though I forget what was the term for the older audience, no matter... Anyways, 'you' might have heard of Shonen Jump or seen in a book store, those are Japanese comics targeted towards boys. I probably shouldn't say comics, since American comics have had such a hard time breaking out of their childish nature to the point where artist and writers tried to rebrand some as visual novels. Such as Watchmen, you wouldn't have considered that as a childish comic would 'you'?

Edits:
Note, I didn't say manga, although I might slip up while speaking. Just to try to keep the terminology jargon as low as possible.
Also if you want to go for shock factor, toss in a discussion of guro. It's a genre that revolves heavily around mutilation, gore, rot, and such things that would make your stomach turn if you're not expecting it.

Well my brother and sister both watch anime (though my little sis only occasionally if dub is available). My father doesn't really care he only agrees that it's good to learn a new language and culture, mom is interesting and watches occasionally. So I don't need to explain anime. As for others I don't even try. If they see it and are interesting then I would but you know how is with those things . . .

Nah i can't explain anime at all.. and when i try, the person im explaining it to just loses interest...
But thats me, cant explain anything haha. Although i can see where the person is coming from, even people explaining anime to me gets alittle boring, i think it might be something you just need to watch.

Like trying to laugh at a joke, or a situation that someone just explained.. Its hard to do. xD

Sometimes it's best not to force what you like on others--hoping that they'll like it too.
The more you pull them, the more they push back.
They want options, like whether a salesman needs to be beside you the minute you waltz in a store.
(Damn, let me have space. Let me browse. You won't let me browse, I won't buy shit. See you on Tuesday.) <-- me @ Apple Store

Let them be curious on why you're interested on certain things.

lol, I don't try to explain it anymore, I just say it is my thing, I like it, enough said. Either you like it or you don't.

If they can't respect you for that, they're not your friends,

if your family can't respect you for that, tell them at least you're not out getting girls pregnant, doing drugs or murdering people... that argument usually shuts them up.

lol what's funny is i have actually told people I am addicted to Anime, Music, and Dr. Pepper which is way better then Sex, Drugs, and Beer. Most of my friends will nod and except that, but a few of them think anime is just as bad as all three of those and I just want to punch them. The only reason why they are still my friends is because they at least respect the fact that I watch anime and will talk about it. They just don't respect anime in general

My girlfriend doesn't understand that not all anime is ecchi or involving men who grunt for five minutes before throwing a punch. She won't even give it a shot

oh wow I feel for ya. That's just like my bff. I try to explain it and say not all anime is like that, but no... the only anime i have gotten her to watch is Fruits Baskets and she said she liked it, but she will never watch it again. and I'm like mainly cuz she only watched the frist like 10 eps and then decided not to watch it again.

None of my friends or family (my sister kind of does and my friend's brother) understands when I try to explain. No matter what I do, they keep calling it "cartoon porn".

I can't really talk about anime in real life to anyone except my sister sometimes and my friend's brother... kinda lame.

I understand that completely my sis likes anime but will only watched dubbed anime that is shown on Cartoon Network and my bro likes DBZ and that's it <_<. I have tried to get them to watch other anime but they refuse so a lot of times i end up talking to myself.

and my bff says the same thing about it being cartoon porn mainly because her cousin started watching it and then got into the porn part and now she thinks everyone who likes anime goes that route

That's the same here a lot of times... or I will finally make a brake through... someone else will enter the room and be like "What's anime?" I will explain just a bit and they go "oh it's Japanese? not interested I only watch stuff that I understand...." and i am just like... "Huh.... anime has been dubbed in English many times." and they walk away like i didn't say anything

Maybe one golden day someone will stick around long enough to fully listen to what we have to say.

yes that would be nice... the other thing that would be nice if they allow me to show them an anime that i know they would like. like for my sis she loves romance/comedy so i showed her Shuffle! and School Rumble. My bro likes fighting and manly stuff so I showed him Street Fighter and DB. i know my one friend would love Nana cuz she loves drama and my other one would love Death Note cuz she likes those murder mysteries stuff but no they don't do it
