My parents don't know what I watch, nor do they care. They don't question me at all. My sister knows I watch anime and has watched a few anime shows, but she only like the Legend of Korra series. My "friends" have never asked me about anime. I'm basically in the clear.

Great question. "Is there any hope for the non-otaku to understand us at all?" Maybe with time persistence and patience. I only have 1 IRL otaku friend. I get looks when i try to explain even simple anime like Lucky Star or Pokemon. My father and step-mom see it as childish .

I now find it hard to dumb down my explanations without getting frustrated. Things like "cartoon" when describing anime aggravate me. I feel condescended upon. I don't explain it anymore. I feel like its a facet of my life that i keep to my self and only share with the like minded.

You are a lucky man/woman. My "friends" mock me for it because i'd rather watch Durarara than listen to them talk about how much they hate running in soccer training.

Sounds like you need better friends. The way I see it, a good friend wouldn't care that you watch anime. Even if they hated anime, they would respect your interests.

I have this problem all of the time. I try to explain the plot of the greatest animes ever, (not Naruto, I'm talkin' about Attack on Titans baby!) but by the time I'm done explaining the plot as best I can, they done seem very interested anymore it totally sucks because i really need somene else in my life who watches anime! But then again, I've been told by my older sister I suck at telling stories

I have a hard time talking to my dad about it.
I don't think he understands how emotional some shows can get.
My mom watches anime a lot, though.

It's pointless. Like when people try to explain sports to me.

I dont explain it because people dont know that I watch anime or read mangas I am a closet otaku, switching tabs when someone comes in my room to like watchseries or netflix.

No, I am not fat or ugly or creepy... I just dont want people to come into my personal hobby, sadly I do not have any friends

O well that's why we have the internet

Friends is a strong word to describe the relationship between us. They just find it weird and me for being overly fan boy about it. But with summer here and my senior year coming, its likely that i won't have to see them often anymore anyway.

Who needs friends when you have us anyway Being a closet otaku is much easier anyway. I came out about it and it is stress full. If you plan to do it though, I'd test the water first and try to find other otaku near you beforehand.

I get this feeling a lot actually. I have one friend who enjoys watching anime here and there but apart from that, no one I know, including my relatives, have any idea what it's all about. Fortunately, even though they have no idea what I am talking about, no one really laughs at me or looks at me any differently.

The biggest thing I cannot seem to explain to people are why I enjoy something that is foreign to me monumentally more that something that I am familiar with. (Mainly referring to the language although some of the culture too). Also, when I finish a very moving, tear-jerker anime, or really any anime that emotionally effects me in someway, no one has any idea how a "cartoon" could make me feel this way. Even when I try to explain it to my brother, whom I'm very close with, he doesn't really understand how powerful this art-form can really be.
