Am I the only one who finds the ratings on this site useless? It's not even Crunchyroll's fault. It's the viewers. It's people like you, reading this thread, that give everything 5 stars. Perhaps it's the first time that you have watched anime and everything is fresh and exciting, you are enthusiastic, I get it. But not every anime is worth 5 stars, there are lots of good ones and a lot of really terrible ones. This is clearly a problem.

If you aren't one of these 5-star people, ignore my accusations.

Now that I have your attention, I wonder what can be done about this? My ideas:

- since people only give out 5 stars anyways, perhaps a like/dislike system as seen on YouTube would be more appropriate
- viewers can give out only one five star rating per day
- the rating system could be replaced with a reputation system like on Stack Exchange (yea, I don't really know how this would work)

Bleach sucks.
It's the Aquaman of anime.

I feel your pain. People on Crunchy gave this anime called Dragon Crisis 5 stars. Don't get me wrong, I love anime that are average at best. But Dragon Crisis was just painful at points to watch and the main character made such stupid decisions it was just excruciating to sit through. Tons of the crunchy reviewers though were kind enough to rate it '5 stars' and waste 13 episodes worth of anime of my life. Basically I feel ya on the topic but there's nothing to do about it. I've just learned to scroll through reviews and find the serious ones. Not the ones like: "OmG!!! WatCh this NOWWwwwww!!!! SOOOO GOOOD! BEST ANIME EVARRRRRR!!!!"

I feel like people tend to be lenient when rating, which is why practically all anime here have about the same rating.

Instead of having a bad/good or like/dislike rating on cr, there should be a neutral option...but that might be a little over board haha

I also have a problem with this. And I've been thinking about it just yesterday. I'm glad you made this thread today.

A lot shows have too many 5 star ratings... it's unrealistic. And worst part is most of the 5 star reviews don't even give a good reason why it's worth 5 stars... most of the time it's like, "I've had fun watching this, so you must watch it too" sort of review...

And like, if you give 2 stars or under to a show, your review will get called "useless". Prime example was my review of Space Brothers, I gave it two stars, and like 2 people found it useful, while the other 23 people found it useless.
You can't say something bad about something without people calling it useless.

What is the point in writing a review for an anime that sucks and giving it 1 star if all the hardcore fans are going to mark your review as "unhelpful" causing no one to read it?

Well Asian boy here is the score. You will learn this on your own one day if you ever have to deal with... people....

No one says anything if everything is going great. Or if they do it is rarely. But when things go bad, or they see something they don't like... such as a person giving a low score on a review to a show they like... They will come out in force to make it clear how much they don't like what is going on, or what they saw, or what was done to them.

You can attract more flies with honey. But if you are trying to attract raging internet users vinegar definitely does work better for that.

Hmm.... i think you need to remember, lots of people have different preferences. For example, I know a ton of people who would rate Full Metal Alchemist a 5 if it was here on Crunchy. I wouldn't. On the other hand, I know a ton of people who wouldn't rate Toradora a 5 here on Crunchy. I would.

I guess my point is this; not all the five ratings you see are people simply rating off of looking at one episode. There are lots of people who genuinely watch the anime all the way through and rate it a five. And other's don't like the anime as much, and so they don't. Ratings will never be perfect because of this; there are different people who prefer different anime. While there probably are people who rate immediately (like on Attack on Titan for instance), you just will have to be aware, and read more reviews to get a better picture. I always, for instance, take a look at my anime list, as well as here, and look at both positive and negative reviews before deciding to watch something. In this way, I've avoided a lot of anime that I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like. In any case, I highly suggest you do something similar.

Best of luck in your watching,
-TAO

I don't think you can just tell people to not give 5 stars. Its their choice entirely and based on their perspective. If they like the anime and you don't. Then thats that. Period .

I don't rate any shows on here. I only do that on MAL. But I can see how that's annoying.

Exactly.

I've done the very same and received nothing but profanity ridden messages from people telling me to shut up. THE problem with the rating system here is that you CAN'T give an objective opinion, which might be a negative one, about a show without being bombarded with down votes or hate mail.

Therefore, nobody gives out objective reviews. Reviews for shows should be written by trusted community members who:

- Write objectively. Even if it means pointing out the negative aspects of a show.
- Display decent, but not perfect, grammar and spelling skills.
- Do not have the Caps Lock key on.
- Have a point.

SO many of the reviews & ratings here should be nuked. They're just useless. We've posted examples before.

It's a plague.

I'd be more than happy to write reviews for shows here. Hell, I'd even buy a yearly anime subscription to the site just to write proper reviews for CR if I knew I wouldn't end up with 5 copies of Goatse stuffed in my inbox.

I much prefer 10 star ratings. For stuff like 3 and a half and what not, you know? But yeah, if you want peoples more honest opinion on anime try myanimelist. It's also helpful if you want to keep track of everything you've watched. I know I'd forget if I didn't have it listed. It's hard to keep track after you've watched 50+ series.

I guess people who would give a particular show a lower rating stop watching after a couple of episodes leaving those who enjoy the anime to continue watching it and giving it high ratings.

Others may just be lenient in the sense that even if a particular show is average they'll rate it highly because "that was a pretty good episode for this show".

Or then people like me, who rate episodes highly when it's good and forget to rate it when it's bad...

As for reviews and reviewers, not everyone has either experience and/or the ability to critically analyse a show (the good and the bad). leaving their own (subjective) feelings coming through. I would think a good reviewer may love a show, but recognise its faults and reflect both aspects in their reviews. Then again, I haven't tried review writing, so I may be wrong.

I completely agree with what you are saying, as it means there is no real way of gauging what is actually awesome and what is not so great, however there are 2 major problems with a rating system especially with such diverse styles of anime on Crunchyroll. As it has been said before just because I love something does not mean you will like it. So Sword Art Online to me is a 5* (and more if i could) where as Hunter x Hunter is more os a 3* but i know plenty who will disagree. The other point is how can you compare 2 different Genres.

My solution to this problem is that there is a team made up from Crunchyroll who give their own reviews to each series. much like what rotten tomatoes does. That way we have both kinds put in and thus making it a least a little more realistic
