So Gintama is that anime that I watch whenever I finish a super depressing or heavy anime. It's like the ginger you eat with sushi lol, it kinda wipes away all the crazy feelings I get after a heavy episode so I can watch something else new. I recently watched Fate/Zero and man was it good (like crazy good) but it was also heartbreakingly dark so it's great to pick an episode of Gintama to watch since its episodes are self-contained and usually (almost always) hilarious.

Soul Eater is another...I can enjoy that show pretty much anytime.

So I'm curious if anyone else has an "refresher" anime that they can watch again and again?

Well after i watch a great show and need something to watch I usually go for a ecchi/harem type. Seeing as how they are a dime a dozen and i guess i'm the only person who gets a laugh out of them.

Whichever slice-of-life, rom-com, or harem is currently airing. I guess that'd be Yuyushiki or Aiura right now.

As for the currently airing ones, I'd say Muromi-san, Nyarko-san W, and The Devil is a Part-Timer!

Otherwise, Gintama.

Gintama or Squid Girl always before I go to bed after I watch something heavy. Just need that little bit of comedy gold.

Similar to the lyrics of Vanilla Salt, I find that a good palate cleanser needs to have a variety of moods in one package. Something that is just sweet leaves an aftertaste, something that is too fluffy doesn't satisfy, and if it doesn't make you feel sad, tense, excited, or frustrated along with the happy sweetness, it isn't able to really get your mental palate scrubbed clean of whatever is mucking things up. You have to put the old emotional system through the wringer, but leave it with at least one happy moment that leaves you smiling.

There are certain episodes of my very favorite shows that have this mixture, and I find that I go back to them time and again when I am in the mood to clean the palate:

Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid - Episode 6: Edge of Heaven - This one almost doesn't qualify due to it's ending with the wrong mood, but

Otome Youkai Zakuro - Episode 13 - Brilliant Finale - This one has the full range, from sadness to excitement along with two brilliant moments of sweetness, the first of which is
and one of the best "heroic monologues" by an anime heroine,
Then top it off with some sadness as the
and then those supreme moments of tsundere sweetness as
Then the end is funny as hell!

Ah! My Goddess - Episode 1 of Season 2 - "Ah! I Wish ... Once More" - A nice "restatement" of the basic premise of the series with a good amount of comedy, tension, and sweetness.

and Episode 10 of season 2 - "Ah! I Just Can't Say It!" - The end of the 4th Goddess arc, with a wonderful moment of sweetness at the end and some fine humor leading up to it.

and Episodes 23 and 24 from Season 2 - the OVAs that were included with the DVD release - Both of these are fine stories, one with a fantastic mood ("Ah! Everyone Has a Destiny!") and the other with tons of humor and a crowning moment of awesome as
("Ah! The Song of Love That Shakes the Heart!")

Toradora! - Episode 25 - Toradora! - This one has the full range, but the main reason I choose it, time and time again, is
But it also has the rest of the stuff that happens after and the final moments in the classroom, along with the restatement of the opening duologue as the show winds down. (I also have been known to just watch the opening of episode 1 over and over...)

But, my new favorite palate cleanser is:

Ano Natsu De Matteru - Episode 9 - Sempai... - This one truly has it all! Frustration
, anger
, regret
, nearly unspeakable pain
, and, similar to Toradora!
When you add in the fact that
It makes for the best palate cleanser in the business. It runs the emotions through the full cycle, leaving you ready to watch anything, regardless of the mood of the show!
