Its the start of our semester and our professor told us to bring something in class which we consider as an art and explain why we would consider it as one. Reasons could be logical, general or personal...
I have plenty of things running through my mind but looking for reasons is somewhat complicated.
what do you have in your mind?

Many people consider arts and sciences as separate irreconcilable ideas, but really, both exist to help us understand truth. While science deals with things that are known and readily comprehensible to us, art helps us make sense of things that are incomprehensible or otherwise inexpressible to us. Often, emotion and feeling is considered one of the most inexpressible things we can deal with, and it's something that is often very difficult to understand, which is why so much art deals with that. However, art can deal with anything that is inherently beyond our ability to understand it.

As someone that likes to study math, it frequently astounds me that mathematicians can write proofs and use reason to think about things like the concept of infinity. We, as humans, are fundamentally incapable of grasping the concept of infinity, and yet we can quite easily work with the concept, and understand it more and more. In that sense, many mathematical proofs qualify as art, because they proceed to reveal things that are nearly incomprehensible to us otherwise. That, in a nutshell, is how I think of art -- it makes sense of the incomprehensible.

art is something a person (people) created to share with the world in hopes to convey or express something, with the potential of emotionally moving a person.. or people.

I guess to me art is something that can be appreciated through the use of your senses.

I think cooking would count as an art. It takes proper technique to balance flavors, aromas, the sound (like a crunch or a sizzle), the texture, then of course making it look attractive to eat. Although people may be drawn in by one factor over the others. That is art that is universal, I suppose.

Art is creation. Taking fundamental parts to create something more complex. This could also mean taking something familiar like a cube and standing it on one of it's points. Familiar objects/ideas interacting in an irregular way.

Well, I'm studying architecture so knowing stuff like this is kind of a prerequisite. Hope it helps.

So then, just to be clear, the receipt that I got at the grocery store is a work of art because it expresses the price of my groceries? It's fine if you want to call that art, but I just wanted to be sure you guys understand that your definition covers most anything humans can do publicly, which seems kind of pointless. Plus, I think it's possible to make art without showing it to anyone.

I had wonderful spongey nice feelings about "art"... and I still believe that there is "art" in everything...

But until you see really... REALLY harsh "performance" art in "Frisco"(sic), you'll never really know how extreme some "people" will push that theory.

All fine and good until you want to gouge your eyes out and are scarred for life. "OH.. but wait.. its ART!"

Keep your art to yourself sometimes... that's what I say...

Problem is, sometimes that is taken literally ....like the "art" made out of bodily fluids or fecal matter, etc. I don't consider that art, nor do I consider anything that is knowingly offensive to a racial, ethnic, or religious group as art.

Personally, my definition of art is: a creative work created from being inspired by something so strongly that it gives the artist the ability to create something extraordinary, like these:

Something that leaves the audience in awe and evoke the same emotion over and over. And a mastery of the techniques in their respective medium.

One author, who I think has the most perfect sentences was Henry James. He wrote with such mastery, it's like every word fits together like a perfect fit puzzle.
Another example I could think of is the Japanese poetry that I keep hearing from the anime Chihayafuru, every time those poems are read, I get really excited, the sound just fits perfectly together.

And that's what art is to me, it takes huge inspiration from a stimulus and a mastery of technique. Anyone can get inspired, but not everyone is born with artistic techniques.

Idk, bring your favorite anime or manga.

I personally like paintings of flowers and landscapes. It gives a feeling of peace and a beauty that I can admire.

Anything, performed or created, with an intention to arouse a feeling and then succeding in doing so is, by definition, a form of art.

I believe art to be anything that you take an artistic outlook towards, that is, to consider it as more than meets the eye with intent to interpret possible meaning behind it. So that means that anything and everything can be art, provided you treat it as such.

But while art is truly wonderful, I feel like people often associate it with perfection, or a higher tier that other things can't reach, which doesn't seem fair. For instance, if an anime say, is insanely funny, people watch it and say "wow, that's so funny it's a work of art". And while I think comedy can be art at times, a lot of the time it's just pure comedy, there to make you laugh and not think very much. But if you say it's not art, people think you're insulting the show, which isn't true at all, something being art doesn't make it better than something that isn't, all it means is that you can look at it artistically and appreciate it that way as well.

I have a lot of friends who are artists so we argue about this a lot
