I for the life of me cannot understand why some people don't like this movie.

It was the Superman movie I always wanted to see.

It mostly comes down to presentation and what to a lot of people Superman isn't.

Compare how the world discovered Superman in this movie to other origin stories.

In the Christopher Reeves film Superman came out doing the hero thing. He went public, caught bad guys, saved lives, caught a falling helicopter with his bare hands.

In the Comics he caught a falling Space Shuttle and saved hundreds of lives

in the animated series it was a falling airplane

but in this movie he hid until he had no other choice. He emerged the first time in costume to turn himself over to the authorities. He feels less like an American hero and more like an illegal refugee.

His battle against Zod and co. causes massive amounts of damage and kills hundreds of people. Smallville is practically wiped off the map, half of Metropolis is in ruins.

and then there is the ending with his final solution to Zod.

When DC rebooted the comics back in the 80s there was a Story similar to this. Superman found a pocket universe where Zod and co. ruled the earth as tyrants and in the end Superman killed them to prevent further atrocities and protect people who would be helpless without his aid.

For 20 years people have been upset about that story until DC officially ret-conned it out of existence.

For a lot of people Superman doesn't Kill
Ever
Part of being Superman is about always being able to find another way.

When Christopher Reeves did the role people talk about how he made certain there wasn't so much as a wrinkle in the costume when he filmed a scene.

in the eyes of a lot of folks this film throws a lot of mud on the S.

Don't get me wrong I personally though it was a decent movie. 6 or 7 out of 10.
But as a Superman film it wasn't quite right

Well I can understand that. Unfortunately when people want to see a realistic Superman movie set in the current real world, you have to be a little more...well realistic.

If I was in Superman's position I would have wanted to save Metropolis too, but not whole the entire world is at stake.
You got to remember, he is Superman but not a God. He can do a lot but not everything.

True but to a lot of people Superman represents an Ideal that humanity should aspire towards.

For that ideal to be compromised and sully itself makes it not something worth aspiring to anymore, it's something that will upset people.

that's something that doesn't just apply to Superman.

Sports heroes who preach fair play and then get busted for drug use
Popular Celebrities who accidentally expose their negative sides
The American Dream
Communism
Democracy

In general we don't like when our ideals get "tainted" with reality. We get resentful when forced to give them up, even when we are old enough that we should have long out grown idealism.

Try reading Superman: Earth One.
A lot of this film seems to draw from that story and it dose a pretty good job of trying to apply a Real World image to Superman.

For me the action scenes was worth it all,
Plus we probably would get a better movie when the sequel comes out, I consider this first one a test run
It was way better than Superman Returns and that makes it good in my book

Well as a superhero marvel and DC fan I have learned to just go with the flow. You can't just expect things in movies anymore. Everyone wants to try new things and put their own spin on things now. Apparently there is still anticipation for the Justice League movie but there is still a ways to go. Hey who knows what they are gonna do. Are they gonna use Christian Bale or use some other guy? Are they sticking with Henry Caville or using a different guy? The thing that is different about Marvel and DC is that DC focused on getting Batman perfect while Marvel needed to introduce more characters. Now it doesn't really matter about Superman whats done is done. The real question is Justice League is a league with only 2. You have wonder woman, the Flash, Hawkman/Hawkgirl as well as Martian Manhunter. Heck DC is so far behind introducing its characters that they can't afford to make Superman better than he is now. Marvel was smart they knew Hulk was a lost cause so they didn't bother with a rere-make. They introduced Hawkeye (sort of) in Thor and had the Black Widow in Ironman 2 Double whammy there. All they needed was Ironman, Cpt America, and Thor which they did quite well i might add. Marvel even had the time to "remake" Spiderman and not include him in the Avengers...yet. Not saying Man of Steel was bad but it was good enough considering what DC has on its plate and who they are up against...Disney/Marvel. I mean Disney is like a leech that just keeps getting bigger the more companies they absorb and DC is only backed by WB which at this point isn't very significant. WB right now isn't even concentrating on its DC comic movies but have been more occupied with Hangovers 12and3. so yeah this Superman is the best we got even with all of the wtfs in the movie. we need to worry about the other heroes now.

Spider-Man wasn't Disney, they haven't gotten the movie license back yet. Several of the Marvel characters had been licensed out to other companies before the Disney takeover and those companies still have the movie rights.

Sony - Spider-Man
Fox- Fantastic Four and X-Men. They used to have Daredevil too I think but had to make a choice between FF and DD, so they decided to keep FF and let Daredevil go back to Marvel/Disney control.

Sony is going to hold onto the Spider-Man license for dear life and Fox is going to do the same with X-men. Fox is going to try and give FF a reboot and I guess how that does will determine if they let control of the license drop.

Setting that aside we know WB is going to Reboot Batman as a more Justice League friendly series of movies (Nolan's version wouldn't really fit in a universe with the JL) and Caville has done good enough as Superman that they are going ahead with more using him.

Depending on how things go they might revisit Green Lantern, which was an OK film, it just tried to squish in too much SFX at the expense of character building. (should have been 2 films. Film 1: Hector Hamond as villain, put more effort on building up the characters and their relationships to each other. Film 2 - Hal joins the Corp, trains with Sinestro - build up the student mentor relationship, meets the aliens, learns the job, fights Paralax.)

Some rumors floating around of them already planning an Aquaman film. (No laughing, Aquaman can be a great character when well written. The current comic shows what can really be done with the character.)

and as I've said before they need to go back to Joss Weadon on hands and knees and beg him for that Wonder Woman story he pitched them years ago.

That leaves the Flash and either Cyborg or Martian Manhunter (depending on which way WB decides to go)

While the world might hail the alien as a hero, Lex can look clearly at the destruction he can bring.

From where I am standing Justice League is doomed to look like a copy of Avengers at this point.

From what I hear in the comics hes a pretty one dimensional chacater. I liked Man of Steel because superman actually had some personality and emotion added to him.

Man of Steel dropped from #1 to just in the top 10 in three weeks. If it really met the expectations of the audience it still would be number one, or at least in the top five. Also let me add something I failed to mention earlier. HE KILLS ZOD...what? Superman and Zod are over, they meet in the universe what a half a dozen times and you kill him off on the first encounter? Every story that extends to Zod or any mayhem that stems from his actions are now unusable....ITS A LOT. Now he cant break out of the Phantom Zone and introduce other sub villains ect...that's all gone. I swear that if they ever do DOOMSDAY they better get it right, I would be extremely upset.

Why does Warner even bother even making Superman movies? everyone knows comic book Superman can kick movie Superman's butt. However, this movie was kind of cool.
