My mom never understands anime and thinks i'm weird cause i'm into a lot of japanese stuff. She absolutely loves romance movies and soap operas so I thought about showing her Clannad (on blu-ray of course). Is this a good idea?

The thing about clannad is that it takes a while to get into it, so you're mum will have to be committed to watching it with you. By the sounds of it, she's not too convinced that anime's great so making her watch a many episode anime to show her how good it is may not be the best idea.
I recommend that you show her one of the more popular anime movies by studio ghibli such as My neighbour Totoro or Spirited Away, that way she can enjoy it in one sitting instead of having to make her sit down loads of times.

Once she sees how cool it can be you can think of showing her some of the longer series, but IMO you'll want to take it slowly and ease her into it

I'd suggest a Hayao Miyazaki or a Makoto Shinkai movie as well (5 Centimeters per Second, Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised In Our Early Days, etc.); if she likes one of those it'd make trying a series more realistic.

It'd also probably be easier for her to relate to as well; all the girls in Clannad look like bugs.

5cm per second didn't really have a big as an impact on me as everyone said it would, though it was a good watch. Anohana on the other hand made me feel a lot of things that you wouldn't expect from a series that's only 11 episodes short. I really recommend watching it, it's worth the tears

"The Girl Who Lept Through Time" is another good one to get your mom to watch.

Watch it in english dub.
Since your mom isn't used to japanese it would be for the best.

Lol, you can watch this with your mom. In fact, there's plenty of anime from Key that you can watch with your mom also like Air, Little Busters, Angel Beats, etc.

Hmmm this is kind of a personal thread which is what it was reported for so i do gotta lock it down.....

You can always ask for advice on this stuff in the anime manga help thread found here though-
http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-10664/the-animemanga-help-thread

Or maybe even the recommend me an anime there locate about... there:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-7173/recommend-me-an-anime-read-first-post

Either way I am glad to see you got some good answers. Personally I would advise "Howl's Moving Castle" because even though it is anime it is also based on a European children's book so has some western tendencies as well. Mom's dig it, trust me.

That said if she is really into soaps and stuff.... maybe take a sideways approach to? Try tossing her into some Asian drama like Coffee Prince or something. It will be easier for her to get into since it is live action but will show the merits of Asian shows too in a format she is already comfortable with.

Anyway locked and closed, good night and good luck!
