Answer:

Aside from shyness

- when improperly dressed we put on our cold face for not all strangers can be trusted especially when we can be seen in the location almost everyday

- or i'm with someone then i can't be caught smiling back for it can be misinterpreted by the person i'm with, i'm just being cautious from gossips that may arise

End:

- the only time i will smile back is when i'm directly approached by the person because i'll never know if he's smiling to the person behind me unless...

I think the reason most girls look away is the same reason guys look away: we don't want to seem creepy. Most people would agree that staring at someone you don't know for prolonged periods of time is weird.

As for smiling when we get caught, I would only do that if I was single and actually checking the person out... Which is usually not the case. (More often my mind is wandering and I realize I'm staring at the same time as he notices ) That sort of smile gives the impression that I want them to approach me.

So I guess if a girl smiles at you when you catch her staring... By all means, go chat her up! She'd probably appreciate it

This seems to be the most legit answer so far.

NYC subways get hella crowded and staring happens but we know better. Smiling should only happen in the above scenario.

Us guys complain enough about mixed messages. Let's not make it harder for ourselves here.

Could be that a great number of females are brought up being told that the male is supposed to be the initiator, they enjoy it.So, when we get caught looking and appraising, who really made the first move? Lol- it's embarrassing to be caught out of character and makes us blush.

This is one of the great tragedies of existence. Life would be so much easier if women would initiate as much as men.

After reading through all the posts posted thus far in this discussion I've come to the conclusion females are a lot like us males. In the past I would instantly turn away if a girl caught me staring at her. When I say staring at her, I don't mean doing a full-body scan of her lol. I mean just seeing her face and how she dresses. Yes, I will admit I have done body scans before but here lately it has been face and how she dresses. A lot of girls I find very attractive my guy friends don't consider 'beautiful'. I've learned as I've grown up beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

Well anyways, I don't turn away when a girl catches me looking. I kinda hold the stare just because I don't care anymore. Odds are I will never see/talk to that girl again anyways so what is the point of turning away? It's kind of cool getting the nerve up to do this. Because now I sometimes find the girls initiating the stares first, then I return it!!!!

I know the situation is always different, but when you get caught looking at a guy why do most of you ladies look away instantly? Why not give a little smile or something...

People do that anyway regardless of the gender?

I only smile at the guy if he is cute.

It's embarrassing. You've just been caught drooling after some stranger and that stranger may not appreciate it.

There could be multiple reasons, or maybe you just don't notice their stares *nudge nudge wink wink*?

Well. Do keep in mind that it could be a stare of disgust? Perhaps you did something or said something that found rude.

That's also a reason to stare.

But if I find someone physically attractive (or they've just done something sweet/kind) and they catch my gaze lingering for a minute, it's a bit uncomfortable. I mean, they might feel flattered, but everyone's self conscious, male or female. I feel really self conscious that my hair's not doing what it should be, or there's something wrong with my clothes, etc.

Most of the time, though, just the feeling of being caught is embarrassing. Like getting your hand stuck in a cookie jar, and your mom having to help you out, while telling you no cookies before dinner.

Something like that for me, anyhow. Everyone's different.

There's also the other options of just gazing off into the distance with your mind wandering and not actually focused on anything and then as you stop thinking and refocus you realize someone had entered your field of gaze and thinks you're looking at them.

I know I've had random people (male and female) actually threaten me in the past when they thought I was looking at them (when actually I was looking at something in the distance or slightly behind/to the side of them. :/) I now have a fear of people thinking I'm looking at them so I try to avoid looking at people...
