Log Horizon

The story begins when 30,000 Japanese gamers are trapped in the fantasy online game world Elder Tale. What was once a sword-and-sorcery world is now the real world. The main lead Shiroe attempts to survive with his old friend Naotsugu and the beautiful assassin Akatsuki.

This concept seems awfully familiar.
In your opinion, how would the general public take it when it's all been said and done?

Can you name some more?
I only know of the .Hack series.

Since I'm getting into games lately I'd like
to watch anime w/ similar feel as SAO, or .Hack.

If it can channel the first 3 or 4 SAO episodes but keep it going Ill be into it, else the whole 'its a game' (when really it might aswell just be a pseudoreal) anime isnt enough to make up for otherwise fairly standard/dull anime

It will definitely be compared to SAO, and has a reasonable chance of overshadowing it if it's well executed (like SAO wasn't). Or it could be okay and, *yawn* just another one of those gamer shows.

Yup, it can definitely be compared to SAO but I'm not sure it will be as popular. The premise certainly is close though. I'm actually looking forward to it :3

I mean this concept isn't new but a lot of people enjoy the thought of it happening so I'm sure this will do well. When fun times turn a little too real and everyone becomes a fish out of water it is interesting to see the psychology at work and how different people react in life and death situations(assuming this has permadeath)

@chrome There is also Ixion Saga DT which is similar in scope. It is on CR.

it'll probably be seen as an SAO ripoff trying to cash in on the hype, which will probably garner some hate, but if it's well executed and winds up being a good show in it's own right, it might be able to overshadow SAO or at least match it's popularity. based on the premise alone, I'm looking forward to it and I wish there were more anime that were similar. can't think of a whole lot of anime based around video games.

Found this on amazon.co.jp. Quick, five-minute translation. Apologies in advance if I interpreted any of this wrong.

"While the fact that people are trapped in an online game is the same as SAO, this title's approach to that premise is different.
SAO is more about Kirito's exploits as a hero, but Log Horizon is more a war story centering on Shiroe.
I guess this is why that, for all 5 volumes I've read, the only one where Shiroe does any adventuring is this first one.
From volume 2, the series takes a Maoyuu turn - it is the same guy after all. Economics, world affairs, and the manipulation thereof take center stage, Shiroe having to deal with all of it.
... But putting that aside, I think the first volume's pretty interesting.
Only time'll tell if the series can hold this up over time, though... past this volume, all the adventuring is going to be handled by Shiroe's followers."

Similar in scope, but unless I'm assuming wrongly about LH, completely different in tone. Ixion Saga DT is really well put together and it's hilarious!

there's also Dragon Drive, an older anime that is based around a virtual reality fighting game where people control dragons. it's more along the lines of Accel World than SAO/Log Horizon, though. I've only seen the first half of it, but it seemed comparable enough by the 18 episodes I've seen. I need to get around to finishing that sometime.

Hopefully Log Horizon doesn't make anything that has a vagina become completely dependent on the MC.

Hmm color me interested, I enjoyed Maoyuu even with it's flaws. A broader scope trapped in a game story sounds fairly interesting.

I've seen this one! Thanks!
I completely forgot about this. Maybe it's time to re-watch it!

chrome_mist, my answer will have to be a wait and see approach. Log Horizon will compared with Sword Art Online, but depending on the how the story flows/artwork/Characters/Character Voices, it could be better/worse than Sword Art Online
