Pffffft. All these series were influenced by Hunter x Hunter's Greed Island arc. I dont care what nobody says.

I mean as long as its not Ixion Saga DT bad I could get into it. (I just didn't like the animation in Ixion Saga and it didn't really capture my interest :/)

But Sword Art's popularity is great apparently so I think it will over shadow it.

Can you name some more?
I only know of the .Hack series.

Since I'm getting into games lately I'd like
to watch anime w/ similar feel as SAO, or .Hack.

Oh man it better not be as boring as Maoyu, but I'm still looking forward to it.

I still need to finish Maoyu, all I need to do is set aside 2 hours, but I can't bring myself to do it.

Well Chromey-Chan there is also Ixion Saga DT as someone else mentioned, not to mention Accel World. Both fairly similar concepts and feature people fighting for their lives inside a game. .hack// is still the best of them though Hopefully this anime will take a more serious approach and not turn into a hentai 50% of the way through.

AnimeKami is a goofus. The Druaga animes are great, but they are not the same concept. They are based on a video game but other than a few fourth wall moments the characters in the story live in that world and there is no "game" being played.

Looks too childish in the drawing to me. I think it will be compared to Sword Art Online and fall short. I'll still watch it though if Crunchyroll gets it.

Heh. There's a bit of that going on already, in a sense, with Akatsuki deciding Shiro is her "lord" and their quest to save a damsel for two less-capable female guild leaders.

On the other hand...female guild leaders. Also, Akatsuki has done the most l33t pwnage so far--Mr. Genius Strategist never even figured out she was a girl until the direct reveal--and it looks like they're rescuing a group of players of both genders, not just one little girl. I doubt this will ascend to the towering heights of sexism that SAO did.

Edit: ...Oh, this is a recently-reincarnated thread. Hm....

Does no one talk about .hack anymore or something? Shouldn't SAO and LH be compared to that?

Really enjoying LH so far

To the best of my knowledge, the .hack franchise has had no new content localized since QUANTUM, despite rumors of a new title for PS3 (which may also not be localized, considering the fate of LINK).

Also enjoying Log Horizon, especially as a Guild Wars player (the original, not the sequel; my computer lacks the muscles).

Too soon to say which is better. I personally really liked the first 2 episodes of SAO, episode 3 onward was hits and misses. I really need to wait at least 6 episodes with LH before I can judge whether it is better than SAO or not. I will say SAO will be more popular though, it seems to more closely fit with Shonen animes than LH does, and everyone loves a shonen anime.

However it seems like the author purposely made Shiroe a complete support class so that he wouldn't be tempted to write a story in which the main character's fighting prowess overshadows everyone else and there is no need for anyone but the main character. It is kind of an artificial solution to the problem, but none the less he realizes there was a problem. This is a sign that he will explore a wide variety of characters.

The one issue I have with BOTH LH and SAO though is, their characters seem very single purpose. Like they are each just one piece of a big jigsaw puzzle... they do what you expect them to do, and they don't stray from that formula. It seems like there is no room for development with them, I swear in SAO all of Kirito's important character development happened in the course of 2 episodes. With LH it is still too early to tell, but the fact that I have a concrete understanding and little question about who these characters are makes me a bit worried that the character development might be mediocre.

The character development in .hack// was superb on the other hand. In the animes you often felt like there was NO main character, and that each character was a puzzle of their own rather than a piece of a puzzle. Even Haseo in //roots didn't really seem like THE main character, but rather just another character. This is quite true of MMO's; in MMO's, even in story quests, you as a player rarely feel that your character is the focus of the story, rather you feel like you are a person trying to help someone else solve their problem. I think .hack captured that feeling perfectly, even with the games : .hack// --- Kite has the data drain power, but the story isn't about him being special, it is about working to get Orca back, working with Blackrose, with Balmung, with millions of other characters who have their own stories : it is like as Kite you are the main character of YOUR own story, while at the same time the other characters are the main characters of their stories. In .hack//G.U. it is a bit different, in this one even though you play as Haseo, it often feels like the other characters are helping YOU develop rather than you helping THEM develop.

Yeah the comparison between these two is pretty unavoidable.

Unlike SAO, Log horizon isn't taking itself too seriously, so I think it'll remain pretty consistent with its quality. I ended up terribly disappointed with SAO since it tried to be something amazing, but its characters and story weren't nearly good enough keep up.

Honestly, I don't see Log Horizon becoming much of an emotional ride. Since death is off the table, I'm worried that there's not much room for any truly perilous struggles. Then again, it's too early to tell with only 2 episodes out.

As far as popularity goes, it's pretty obvious SAO will end up being more popular. It had way more hype surrounding it since people thought (incorrectly) that this was the first real MMO anime (.hack deserves more mention here). Not to mention that the first 3 episodes of SAO were, admittedly, pretty freaking amazing, while Log Horizon's first 2 are just pretty good.

I feel it's way to soon to determine which is better I'll come back and post my complete opinion after Log Horizon is finished.

Up until now though, SAO is, imo, still better than LH, whereas LH can quite easily surpass SAO, and has the potential to do so. I agree that SAO was pretty amazing its first three episodes, then plummeted downwards afterwards, but so far LH isn't really qualified as an amazing anime.. it's just a really good one.

Once again though, it's too early to tell, and I'll most likely finish LH if it, at minimum, stays consistent

Edit: Log Horizon will probably never win, however, in terms of popularity. Sad truth.
