I don't suppose there is any idea of when the problem will be sorted overall?

As someone with CR on Xbox, PS3 and Roku, juggling between the three to find which one works best for a particular series is doable. But it would be nice for all three to be stable, so I don't have to room-hop or system hop(*) just to spend an hour or so watching anime.

Howdy!

So, going forward with these, can you please do the following:

Shoot an email to us using the 'Contact Us' form letting me know the following.

Baker, episode X of show Y is skipping 10 / 20 seconds. Can you please try a manual re-encode of the video.

Thanks much!
-Baker

Does this mean there's no point in reporting the time in the video where this happens, as you have to reencode the whole thing anyway? It's enough to see that the video skips at the same place and the same length every time?

Incidentally, and just to ask, how does the various video resolutions apply here? Say, the video skip happens at the best quality, but if the video itself were to jump to a lower-quality version at the skipping point (due to me watching it at the high-traffic hours of the day), there might be a chance where the skipping doesn't happen.

Having the time it skips is still helpful. This let's me turn around and test on the xbox next to me and then see what is going on.
If I'm unable to reproduce then I can still pass it along to have all resolutions tested.

I've had the issue happen on various episodes of Hunter x Hunter after #60. Just like the above posters, if I rewind the video it will still happen in the same spot every time.

This happens to me consistently when I'm watching CR on my Xbox 360. The video will skip 1-3 times in just about every episode of anything I choose to watch. It will skip 10 seconds or more of the show. I can rewind to just after the point of the skip to watch it properly, but if i rewind to before the skip, it will skip at the same spot. It is not any one show, as this has happened to me on many different shows. This does not happen on my CR app for my android and it does not happen on my pc. It's to the point that you want to throw things as it skips over sentimental moments or important dialog.

Also happening to me, my connection is perfect and Ive never had a problem but every couple of seconds it would either freeze or skip ahead...

There's a few threads in the Xbox 360 sub-forum about this issue. Based on past experience, I'd recommend sending a message via the /help?topic=contact form or to support@crunchyroll.com, addressing Bjaker (Baker) with a list of episodes and the series, along with timecodes and links if you're able, and request a manual re-encode for those. Posting on the forums about the issue will sometimes get Baker's attention, but it'll usually take a few days instead of a few hours (outside weekends).

This will also work if you ever come across the "Server Unavailable" error message.

I'm sure I'm just making his job harder.

It seems like it's more of an issue with CR for the Xbox 360 than an issue with the thousands of individual episodes and shows. If it's so consistant and happens regardless of the show; at least that's how it's been for me. I don't understand how slowly fixing every single episode will help in any quick way. Wouldn't it be easier to fix the 360 side of things? I honestly have no idea about how one would go about fixing such things, but that just seems like it'd be a lot less time consuming that way. Especially due to the vast amount of issues.

Indeed.

There's clearly something in either the stream or the caching that trips the Xbox app up, otherwise re-encoding wouldn't have any effect at all. However, surely finding out why it falls over would be better?

Currently, each time I watch something on my Xbox as opposed to my PS3 (they room switch depending on what I'm mainly gaming on...) I am constantly on edge waiting for a skip to occur.
I know they'll reencode if necessary, but that first watch is ruined at that point. I'd really rather know whether or not a real fix is in the works.

Baker has passed the issue on to the engineers, so they are at least aware of the issue and, I imagine, still trying to discern the root cause.

I'm actually curious as to why a re-encode actually makes a difference, since using the same settings should result in nearly identical files, but perhaps that is not the case.

it seems like to me at least, when i was first started watching the video's i would get lag spikes every once and awhile and the quality would change to crap then go back to normal"when i first started watching crunchyroll." Now i don't get the quality changes but i get skips 10-20seconds worth. To me it seems like these are connected. maybe the range needs to be adjusted. Just my two cents.

quick question. Why doesnt CR buffer?

I'd agree with this if the results were less consistent, but without seeing a timecode comparison from other users, it's hard to tell for sure.

CR has a small buffer in order to minimize the chance of piracy, and acts as a kind of DRM.

doesn't a required login cover the whole piracy thing? Every anime can be found online posted for free after all, i just like CR because of how i can watch it on my samsung and xbox without dragging my browser over, not to mention the quality is normally better. Even a 30second buffer would be awesome, so we wouldn't have to really worry too much about quality for us broad band folks. even netflix has a buffer, im not trying to be a @$@$. But many of my friends ask the same question.

Since there are still groups that are able to rip subs minutes after they are made public on CR, that doesn't seem to be stopping pirates. As for Netflix, it's still primarily Silverlight, which has a strong DRM protection built-in.

I myself don't have super-fast Internet access, but I'm satisfied with the quality I'm getting on the Xbox (other than issues specific to that platform), but it'd be nice to fill those bars.

Yep, only moved down here a few months ago, so I haven't really had the chance to leave the Dallas area yet.
