Just call it Japanese animation. That is what I do.

I don't get why this discussion exists. Anime is a subcategory of cartoons, Anime are Japanese cartoons, thus, cartoons. Genre, story, plot, characters and boobs have nothing to do with it. From my experience, the only people who've usually said otherwise are either weaboos or were-hipter otakus (or hiptakus) who can't convince their friends or parents that watching Death Note is not the same as watching SpongeBob or Dora the explorer (just use the Simpsons or Boondocks as examples to tell em not all cartoons are for kids if your too insecure, people).

Calling Pet Girl Sakuraso a cartoon is correct (less precise), calling it an anime is correct (more precise), calling it trash is correct (even more precise)

And from what I heard , in Japan, whether it's Dragon Ball, Family Guy, SpongeBob, Toy Story, Kung Fu Panda or My Little Pony, they call everything Anime... hmm

Ironically, Westerners don't take that view. It's as if being equated to Japan is not a good thing to do.

Anime is a shorter word to use than "imported japanese cartoons" when describing my hobbies.

Any anime fan who takes offense at 'cartoon' needs to get over themselves and stop affecting hipster values.

I've come across people, who get angry at the idea of "American anime".

Yeah the difference is style and I differentiate depending on which coast.

In the end though most if not arguments are pointless, and should try to be avoided :/

Cartoon original means simple drawing (usually on newspapers). Animation is a film make from drawings; it's also called animated cartoon. Animation and cartoon are used interchangeably.

Anime means animation in Japan. Cartoon = animation; animation = anime, so anime = cartoon.

But we usually use the term anime for any animation from Japan. It's like calling manga instead of Japanese comics or manhwa for Korean comics.

however you wanna look at it i suppose, but in my "social circle" or whatever no one would understand what I meant if I said "anime", so I always define it as a Japanese cartoon. They are different, but they are also both animations. *shrug*

But can Americans make any of that?

I don't care what people say. Technically, anime is a cartoon. That doesn't make it worse. It's still anime. But it is a cartoon.

The funny thing to this question to me always is the fact that people apparently think 'cartoon' is derogatory in some way and have to define what they watch around it.

Actually, Cartoon is the American coloquial term for animation, Anime is the Japanese colloquial term for animation. We use the term anime to mean Japanese stuff and Cartoon to mean western stuff, Japanese call all animation anime, regardless of origin.

Westerners gave the term anime the meaning of japanese cartoon, just like we gave the term hentai the meaning of cartoon porn, Japanese use the former to mean all animation and the latter just means pervert, it refers to nothing else.

I'd definitely say that anime would fall under the category of cartoons, since it started out being inspired by American cartoons way back in the 1960's. However, I'd say that anime refers to the specific style of cartoon from Japan. It's like how Catholicism is Christianity, but Catholicism is a different branch that believes in the mass, pope, vatican, etc.

It gets annoying seeing all these Facebook fanpages posting pictures of how anime is different from cartoons. but they're practically the same thing, just different styles.

Anime is a cartoon as well as some drawings such as even political cartoons in newspapers. I only refer to anime as anime or cartoons from Japan, but never just cartoons.

There are American cartoons aimed at kids that do have a set storyline. Examples include Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Young Justice, and Teen Titans.

It kind of is, but it kind of isn't, but it kind of is. My point is, anime is anime and it is beautiful just the way it is. (this is the part where your face turns red, you slap me, and scream "BAKAAAAA!")
