I have always preferred marathoning shows. I have a huge backlog (both digital and physical releases) and because of that, I don't really do simulcasts. I think the last simulcast I did was Haruhi-chan and Nyoron Churuya-san (and that was a while ago). The other thing is that I REALLY HATE cliffhangers so I would rather watch something at my own pace. I can admire those that watch simulcasts, but it's not something I like to do. When Sailor Moon starts up again, it MIGHT be a bit more difficult to wait, however.

With the rise of legal streaming, I've definitely gotten more into watching shows as they air. I'm not against going back and watching finished series (that's how I watched Kuroko and Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere), but it's hard to make the time when there are usually so many good shows airing, but I might have more time this season than I have the past couple.

In recent seasons, my approach has been to attempt to wait and marathon.

For more popular series, I'll often use the "running start" approach where I wait several episodes (until about episode 8 of a one cour series or about one season for a two cour series) before starting. Far more often than not, I catch up to the current episode well before the series ends.

It is rare these days that I begin watching week-to-week from episode 1. I've been very tempted with Valvrave, as I had already watched the first series, but thus far, I've avoided that temptation.

On the upside, one can watch at their own pace, which often can make the series more enjoyable.

On the downside, you run the risk of being spoiled, and can't participate in current discussions.

I like simulcasts because otherwise I just binge. If I marathon something, it's gonna be a legit-can't-stop-watching-sh*t-it's-5-am sort of thing.
