So decided to create a forum to help people and myself look for more animes to watch that are not quite mainstream animes. Most people have heard of the Narutos,One Pieces,Attack on Titan(one of my favorite spring lineups btw), and most of this springs line up. I love to watch anime pretty much everyday for a couple hours to relax and unwind. So in-between my current weekly simulcasted airings i look for another anime to watch while i wait for the next episode to come on. I like to look for non mainstream animes that some people might not have heard of to expand my anime library. I'll start of with my list to kind of set the tone to what im looking for. Feel free to discuss why you like a certain anime, why people should definitely check one out, or what ever suites ya while you create your list. If any questions about any of the ones i submitted just let me know, you can also check my watchlist out if your looking for something to watch, i continue to add to it as i watch.

The list is in no particular order of preference:
1)Ergo Proxy: In a world where humans and androids, known as autoreivs, live in relative peace, there exists a domed city named "Romdeau". Under the implementation of complete management control, it is a paradise where feelings are literally discarded, and the governing council dictates the way of life the citizens should live. But this Utopian landscape is soon broken by a series of mystifying murders. Re-L Mayer, a female inspector from the Citizen Information Bureau, along with her autoreiv partner Iggy, are tasked to solve the murder cases. She is soon attacked by a creature drawn to her which is neither human nor android, and learns about the mysterious phenomena called "Awakening", an event which draws her further into the case...and to the world beyond the limits of Romdeau.
2)Serial Experiments Lain: The first episode opens with the mysterious suicide of a high-school girl, Chisa Yomoda. Chisa-chan was a classmate of Lain Iwakura, a quiet, 14-year-old high-school girl. One of the other girls in the class has been receiving e-mail messages from Chisa-chan, and Lain discovers she also has mail from Chisa-chan. In the mail she explains to Lain that she just abandoned her flesh. She assures lain that she still is alive in the 'wired' world. After getting a new 'navi' and adding a 'psyche' circuit, Lain spends more and more time in the wired. It seems that Lain has at least 2 personalities, and Lain's first personality is changing even now. Who is lain? Who are the 'knights'? Can the wired influence the real world with a prophecy? Is the real world nothing but a hologram of the information in the wired?
3)Haibane Renmei: A dream of falling from the sky...and then birth. Rakka is born from a large cocoon into the Old Home, greeted by a group of females with small wings on their backs and shining halos above their heads. Soon Rakka’s own wings grow, a halo is placed on her head and she is told that she must work in the nearby town of Grie. She soon realizes that the town and the entire world they live in are confined behind the Wall, a tall, impenetrable wall that none except the mysterious Toga are allowed to exit
4)Wolf's Rain: According to an old legend, when the end of the world comes, Paradise will appear; however, only wolves will know how to find it. Although wolves are believed to have been hunted to extinction nearly two hundred years ago, they still exist, surviving by taking human form. Freeze City is a northern human city in a world where the majority of people live in poverty and hardship.
5)Now and Then Here and There: Shu is a typical Japanese boy, but has an unbeatable, optimistic and determined attitude. However, when he sees a mysterious girl with strange eyes named Lala-Ru up on a smokestack, he is soon pulled into a strange desert world. Shu soon discovers the true terrors of war, which includes genocide, brutal torture, hunger, thirst, and child exploitation. Now Shu is trying to save Lala-Ru, as well as his hard earned, and often reluctant, new friends from the insane dictator, Hamdo. Whether Shu can possibly accomplish saving those he cares about while still holding up to his values remains to be seen.
6)Paranoia Agent: An elementary school boy on inline skates dubbed Lil' Slugger is said to be responsible for a series of mysterious street assaults in Tokyo. None of the victims can recall the boy's face and only three distinct details are left in their memories: golden inline skates, a baseball cap, and the weapon: a bent golden baseball bat.
7)FLCL: Naota is a normal Japanese 6th grade boy (although a little cynical), but when his older brother leaves for America to play baseball, his brother leaves his homeless 17 year old girlfriend Mamimi behind. Mamimi is sending mixed signals and advances to Naota, and he doesn't know what to do about her. But to make matters worse, Naota's world is totally turned upside down when he is run over by a woman on a Vespa. During their first encounter, she hits him over the head with her guitar, which then causes a horn to grow out of his forehead. She calls herself "Haruko" and her presence changes Naota's life to even further insanity.
8)Utawarerumono: The story takes place in the world surrounded by nature such as forests. In this world, there is the mankind almost looks like the human being, but it has ears and a tail like an animal. One day, Eruru who lives in a village of marginal region saves a masked young man lying serious injured. Fortunately, he narrowly escapes from the death, but he has lost his memory. Tuskle, the grandmother of Eruru, names him Hakuoro. Soon, this encounter will make them lead checkered lives.
9)Juuni Kokuki(The Twelve Kingdoms): Yoko Nakajima, an unhappy high school student, is one day suddenly faced with a strange man who swears allegiance to her. After a battle with demon-like beasts, he then takes her to another world along with two of her classmates. There, her appearance has changed and she can understand the language even though her classmates cannot. But their status as "Kaikyaku" (people who come from Earth) makes them hunted fugitives, so they wander the land of the 12 countries, simply trying to survive and to figure out the reason why they were brought to this world
10) Mushishi: The Mushi are neither plant nor animal, neither microbe nor fungus. They are more like primitive life forms. Their existence is so innocuous that we don't notice that they exist until they have manifested some mysterious phenomena. They do not exist to frighten people; they just are. These are one-off stories about Ginko, the Mushishi, one who knows about the Mushi and who acts as a mediator between humans and Mushi. During his journey, he meets various people and Mushi.

Baccano: same director of durarara I think? Not sure, don't quote me on this. But I enjoyed that one. I love the way they tell the story. It contain fantasy elements.

Natsu no arashi: This is a really funny anime. But it does have sad moments, like seriously sad. Contain some elements of WW2.

Just as a heads up the mod team has taken a look at this thread and while I think the anime chosen in many cases are actually very well known and have good followings I gotta say.... There is basically nothing wrong with the thread. Other than missing some spaces and line breaks....

So this thread is good to go!

Personally the mostly not well known Anime I would recommend would probably be stuff like...

Glass Mask
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
His and Her Circumstances
Excel Saga (sue me it is funny)
Edit: Yes I like Natsu no Arashi too

I'll second Lain, being that it's one of my favorite anime ever. Although it isn't really unheard of and I meet a lot of people who have heard of it when I mention that it (Along with Anohana) is my favorite.

For anime on this site I'll toss out SoRaNoWaTo, pretty much K-ON meets WWII and trumpets. ^_^

And although it's gained quite a bit of popularity and isn't "Unheard" of, Anohana is still not really mainstream either. It's a great story if you don't mind crying. it's about friendship, letting go, sad moments in life, death, living, and bad cooking.

to uhohimdead: No matter what list you create there will be plenty of people that have heard of quite a few animes on the list that is created, there are a lot of avid anime watchers out there, but a lot of people are also just starting to watch as well. I created the forum for both parties, not just to cater to one or the other. Like i said "non mainstream animes that some people might not have heard of", it really just depends on how long and how many you have watched on whether or not the list will pertain to you, but that doesnt mean that it wont be beneficial to someone else. Im just looking for a list of animes that people might not have heard of, the animes that are not discussed and advertised on a regular basis.
