I don't know if a thread on this topic has already been made; I searched and couldn't find anything. My apologies if this turns out to be a duplicate thread.

Are there any anime out there that could have been great, but never quite made the mark? In your opinion, what are some anime with the greatest misused potential? What about the show separated it from being decent to amazing?

sword art online could've have been good if they had better character development for kirito and made the show seem less rushed

My vote would go to Kotoura-san. Though I feel like I am alone on this. What I think separated it from other slice of life moe anime was not just the mind reading aspect, but the beginning. First 20 min of the first episode were pretty awesome in my opinion it did a lot to not only set up the anime but make you feel for the main character. But the anime lost a lot of what made me initially interested in the anime after the first few episodes, which kinda still irks me to this day haha.

It opted in for pervy, moe, comedic scenes instead of the pretty intense backstory and the kind of interesting characters involved in it. Plus the love interest gets like no backstory haha. Other than having some pretty funny mind reading scenes, some pretty intense themes, and a good main character and background, the anime felt generic and predictable.

But the thing has good reviews all around so what do I know? lol

K-On! - Could've been about the music.

The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat - Completely jumped the shark after the 3rd episode. I'm only finishing it now so I can complain later.

Another - Oh man that ending. Promised so much, and delivered all the wrong things.

The Mystic Archives of Dantalian - It was so very episodic, which was fine in it's own way, but only 3 or 4 episodes actually provided story progression, and I was just do unsatisfied in the end >_>

If you have a spare moment, read the review I wrote of Kotoura-san on CR through my CR profile. I think I summed it up quite nicely.

A Certain Magical Index - Bad protagonist characters that are supporters are more special then him.
Photo Kano - Bombed at first episode had potential to be good Romantic anime.
The Severing Crime Edge - I mean it`s not all bad but it goes for being a Dark Series with mature themes but it`s supposed to be serious in scenes but then they drop comedy elements that don`t fit at all. It`s really a random series that cant balance it`s themes at all.

Yes! This is exactly how I felt about it. Feels good to not be completely alone on this. Well written also. That anime could have been a whole lot more.

Goober speaks truth. What do you do when a show refuses to play by the rules it sets for itself and does nothing but sputter and stumble onwards? There are good characters in there (no, not the lead; he's an idiot), but they deserve a better plot than they get.

Huh. Well, apparently people hating Kotoura-san is on the extremely short list of things that make me want to punch someone. So I guess I'll leave it at that. If you can be bothered to read a semi-explanation, check the WMG page on TV Tropes.

Anyway..."misused potential" usually means the show turned out to be something you don't care for, so you resent it. Or that it was overhyped, i.e. it never had any potential to begin with. SAO probably counts, though. It starts off great, and then degenerates so methodically and so completely that you almost wonder if they did it on purpose.

Case Closed would have been sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better if it had character develpoment.

Angel Beats had a LOT of characters packed in 13 episodes. I really wanted to know all of the characters' backstories >.<

Sword Art Online was Epic at first glance but then some plot holes appeared, Like why did Kayaba trap them all in the first place? ;^;

Guilty Crown's ending was rushed ;^;

But both of those are based upon novels... so either the adaptation messes things up or you have to blame them for following the original material... Perhaps it doesn't matter in the end but with adaptations I feel it is a bit different.

You do realize that Kotoura-san is based upon a manga, right? In this case the super intense 10 minutes that everyone loved was anime only! It is my question to the director that I suggested they ask in the news section. People ended up calling it a bait and switch and sadly they preferred the anime original part to the rest of the season which is mostly the same as the manga... except...

If they'd made the whole show like the first 10 minutes it would have been cool but it wouldn't really have been Kotoura-san. Sadly, it seems no one (except me, who reads the manga) really likes the real Kotoura-san...

Kotoura-san had SO MUCH USEFUL potential.
They could have made it a good romance anime, have Kotoura gradually warm up to people, explore her character, you know, a good moe romance, but NOPE.
Instead the romance was forced, no character development, love interest was bland and shit, characters were shit, episode 4 pissed me off, Kotoura is just.. ugh, too much unneeded fanservice, and who the hell thought it would be funny to add a perverted grandparent who wants to fondle his own granddaughters breasts!
And that ending, I mean, why..

Sword Art Online was the biggest disappointment in my anime life. I had so much expectation for it after watching the first episode and I see so much potential.
It's too bad that the main character is cheesy as hell, the hero-saves-the-day kind of character and goody-two-shoes. The story focused on solving mystery/crime and some random shoujo romance in between when it's supposed to be about "SWORD ART ONLINE". The antagonist was only seen at the beginning and a little near the end of the first arc. =_=;

Uta no prince sama
has one of the prettiest animation I've seen in my anime life, but everyone on that show is lame as hell. They're too nice to each other. It's frustrating to watch these cheesy characters interact. But the plot and animation are really good, it could have been the perfect anime if the characters were given some life.

Blast of the Tempest, it had everything in the first half of the series, then after episode 14, it just became stupid... and decided to become a shoujo anime in the second half. Wasted potential.

Kokoro Connect, this would have been a great anime if the characters were acting their age instead of being so motherly and fatherly.
