Black Butler for me, the show could have been a pretty good Faustian tale if it would have been darker and had Ciel want to deny his contract near the end, but instead it just focused on comedy that didn't work (at least for me) and pretty much pointless side plots. If only it would have been more serious, it could have been just so much better, but the fangirls don't flock towards serious stuff, they flock to manservice comedies it seems

I'm not even touching the second season, it just shouldn't exist
Actually you might like the second season. I had the same problem with the first season of Black Butler. There were so many side episodes that had little to nothing to do with the main plot; it made it very disappointing. The second season, however, makes up for that completely. It may be shorter than the first season, but it is much more darker and has almost none of the poorly written comedic relief. You should give it a shot.

Elfen Lied because I feel they were unsuccessful in making up an ending for the anime. They should have waited another year or whatever it was for the manga to finish up. It would have been pretty cool as a 25 episode anime with a complete story.

A lot of anime get really rushed in the third act during a 13 to 25 episode season. Some notable ones for me were Demon King Daimao, Blast of Tempest, Red Data Girl, Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Severing Crime Edge, Henneko Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat. And probably a bunch of others that I'm not remembering.

I'm one of the few in this thread that like Kotoura-San and SAO quite a bit as they are I think

Sword Art Online really did waste so much potential. I loved the content of the first season.

I did... I think my upset with the first season carried over, but the story ENDED, that's why i say it shouldn't exist, and even then it still has a lot of the wackiness and manservice, maybe not as much, but I just was disappointed with it too, it should have been good when they ended it the first time, not going back and rewriting it the way they did.

I just didn't like it, maybe some day I will come back to it, just not any time soon

I'll back you up on that, I LOVED Kotoura-san (a pleasant surprise! I just watched this anime to fill in time between waiting for new episodes of Naruto and it blew me away! One of my favorite animes now ) and the only problem with SAO is I wanted more.

Sword Art Online could have been something good. It started out with so much potential the whole trapped inside a game and if you die you die could have been really cool if they used it right. It is largely ignored or used as a way to create silly drama. They fell into the trap of making it a generic boy meets girl anime and made it all about that. Season 2 went even more in that direction and it just became a laughing stock.

I also hated how the Laughing Coffin guild was barely used. They started out looking like the major threat. Player Killers in a game where people die for real but they were just ignored so we could have more Kirito and Asuna sucking face. The last time they were used was for some ridiculous jealousy storyline. Could have been the best MMO anime ever. But they just made it boring and pandered to a certain demographic.

Shin Sekai Yori i really wanted to like because again it started out with loads of potential for a deep and interesting story. They should have got a better writer on the project instead of this pretentious dick. All he does is throw things in your face "look at this! Look how cookie and strange i am! I am so original!" Sad thing is he is not original and being weird for the sake of being weird does not make a good story. Big shame.

Elfen Lied on paper is good but then you watch it. And it's just full of pointless fan service and plays more like a really boring version of Invader Lum. If it lived up to it's potential for an interesting story and the hype i would have loved it. What i got was a badly thrown together story wrapped in fan service and pointless shock value moments. "Look we killed a puppy! And we covered child abuse! We are so edgy!" Yeah. Still waiting for that deep storyline i was promised. "Look we chopped a person into pieces while she cries for daddy!" Annnd then i give up and wish i could get back the hours i wasted.

Gravitation i wish lived up more to what it could have been. I like the idea of an anime about an up and coming band trying to make ita nd all the have to go through. It started out well enough with a group just being discovered while playing as a support act for an established group but then they introduce the sexuality storyline. Along with trying to get famous the main character is coming to terms with his liking men after he falls for a charming novelist. Fine. This could have been a decent storyline if it didn't then proceed to beat you over the head with pointless man service and nonsensical drama where the characters stop acting like normal human beings for the sake of plot. The band storyline takes a backseat and it just becomes boring.

Shame really.

Dragon Ball GT had the opportunity to be a little more grounded and return the series back to its lighter days. You had fresh blood in Uub, Marron, Bra and Pan which could have made for some good character development since they were all young when the Z series ended. You had also had an aging cast which could have led to some different training arcs or surprise appearance when they main cast are in a pinch. They could have even taken a darker approach like the Future Trunks story line. Toei could have been smart about it. You have new 'lost decade' characters being introduced all the time.

Instead we got Goku being wished back to a kid by a new set of Dragon Balls by the first set of villains. Then going on a space adventure with his granddaughter and, for some odd reason, Trunks. Some of the things from Toriyama are no better. Now we are seeing everyone turn SSJ3 or SSJ for no reason, the same characters, saying and doing the same thing until its all played out. With the Dragon Balls being discovered time and again, their origins and rules explained, every possible storyline with them has been explored. The monkey's paw effect introduced in GT's Shadow Dragon arc was actually pretty interesting and had potential. Dragon Ball really did have loads of potential, but now I'm sick of it.

Although I agree that SAO as an anime was a little disappointing, you have to remember that the anime sticks entirely with the light novels, and the light novels do get better and better.
However, as for the anime, I think they could have added filler episodes to bring out more character development and create more action. Giving each arc its own 25 episodes could have balanced out the slow romance episodes and the action-packed fighting episodes.

Here I go:

Dog x Scissors- As I watched the series to the end, I just had to ask myself "what the fuck happened to the "plot"?" Was there even a plot to begin with?

Dansai Buri no Crime Edge- It was good but some things just needed to be better.

Shingeki no Kyojin- I wish it were a senien series sometimes, everyone had personality/felt human, Mikasa replaced Eren as the main character, more gore/intensity/drama/tragedy/vulgarity, everyone in the 104 Trainee Squad were older, more action with a little less talking, and over all adds everything else it somewhat lacks. Still, I enjoy the series/its my favorite but I gotta be honest in my own opinion.

Axis Powers Hetalia- If it wasn't a history lesson all wrong and much more serious, other then that, I find joking around with stereotypes(negative and positive) to be much more enjoyable.

My personal opinion though.

Yukikaze - If there is one show that could have broken all previous boundaries set by anime but failed horribly

The novels were phenominal and really quite in depth. The anime was more cinematic cut scenes for the end of the first book and parts of the second.

Why anybody would think that condensing two complex novels into 5 short episodes is beyond me. What they did do though was absolutely fantastic in quality, just wish they did SOMETHING with it. However, out of respect for the novels, I still use the FRX for my avatar pic.

You know that shounen is just a demographic and has nothing to do with content, right? The same with seinen. Look at Gunslinger Girl - it has child brutality, drugs, excessive violence, conspiracies, and is overall very dark for what it appears on the outside to be - yet it's a shounen series and most claim it to be seinen when it's not.

What I'm trying to say is Shingeki no Kyojin could be seinen and it would be the exact same as it is now. Just, simply, under a different demographic, meaning it was serialized in a different magazine.
