There's really no reason to be a jerk for the hell of it. I have the door analogy happen all the time at work. I open the door for the person behind me, she waltzes through the second door and doesn't bother to return the favor. I usually laugh of the lack of courtesy I guess you could call it, but I still continue to open doors for people, let women on/off the elevator first, donate, etc.

If you're expecting praise or a reward for everyday kindness you're doing it wrong.

People nowadays treat each other like trash, basically.

People nowadays are kinder more egalitarian than people have been in a long, long time. Slavery is gone. Women have rights. Children have rights. Chances are, where you live, people are not being killed for what they do or don't believe.

I just want to know that there is generosity amongst people. I consider that a part of our human nature that what makes our evolutionary process more of a grand design. If we lose that part, what makes us different from any other "animal" ?

What makes us different from other animals? Generosity? Altruism? Morality? These are traits that we can find in other animals. We just reused them for our own benefit. These traits are important but if you're looking for something that makes us different, you probably need to look for something else.

I'll always be kind and empathetic, because that's just the way I am. My faith in humanity, however, was lost long ago...and from the way I see it, it's never coming back.

If you have to worry about what everyone else is doing, then you're your biggest problem.

If you have to ask yourself all those questions just to decide if you should be a nice person or an asshole, then you're no better than anybody else.

Think for yourself and be how you want to be. Don't clump yourself up with "humanity," just be human... whatever that means to you.

I'm more interested in this magical period of time you repeatedly mention where being courteous and kind to everyone was part of popular culture. I don't recall there ever being a period of time where everyone was just nice.

When I was good to someone and they act like a hypocrite and rude.....
They'll be seeing me knocking on their front door (if they have one)

When I give money to homeless people while driving by
I turn back around a hour later and see what they do with it.

When I hear someone cuss
I just turn around and glare
and say "That mouth of yours will be in hell"

When someone dosent appreciate the work I did for them that they wouldn't do
I just shrug my shoulders knowing that what goes around comes around

When someone just stab me in the back with their words for No reason
I just smile and say "and you too "

When humans can't understand what's considerate and what's inappropriate
I just know, that I was that dumb to one day in my life

When people cant understand humans will be humans
I just cry......

Yeah im probably off topic....but..yeah sorry for that -.-
it probably makes no sense

But in case you want to crush your faith in humanity even more, here's another one.

Faith in humanity is the only kind of faith I have. God can go suck it.

But my take-away from that first link is the duck feeding the fish. Faith restored in all of existence.

You should go through life being kind, but also having a back bone and standing up for yourself.
The ridiculously nice guy who doesn't ever argue usually ends up with a controlling bitch of a wife (or maybe a husband, too!)
The ridiculously nice guy who stands up for himself as well usually ends up with a good girl.

nah. there is really no point to being kind and generious anymore. That is just the way it is now days, at least in our country. The kindest thing i did in recent memory is on halloween night I was going back to my house by train (this was the last train to make a stop at my house)... there was hardly anyone on the train except for myself. I was just about to get off when I noticed laying on the seat was a womans purse. I looked all around the train car to see if anybody was there. witness ect. Anyways I stuffed the purse into my backpack and took it home with me. To my luck the contents were as follows. A fossil purse, iPhone 3GS, Car keys and cheap sunglasses. I could have easily sold the stuff on craigslist. But instead I called the girls friend (contact) to pick up the purse. Why did I do it. Because I felt a sense of infatuation of the girl I never even met. And I got nothing in return. I am still kicking my ass to this day. Seriously I could have invested that money into legitamate things that would have made me more money. I see it we live in a dog eat dog world, where the strong crush the weak. That is all.

I guess its being kind and giving, but I don't see it that way. I just do what I want to do, and I have the opportunity to do it ill do it. if that person stabs me in the back or lies about what he was going to do with what I give him. oh well. My mistake. I guess ill never stop being a kind and giving person.
