I'm new here- if you can see the picture that is me xD
I am currently learning German, but I have a pretty solid grasp on it. I want to begin learning Japanese, but I don't know how to start. Do you tackle basic greetings/items and then begin on the writing system? And what about the writing system itself? There's two forms of writing, in addition to Kanji. Should you ignore the written portion until you can speak it well enough? HELP.ME.

If u have further questions, it might be better to continue in that thread.

Well take this from someone who is still learning, and will begin college classes for Japanese in 2 months (but i am by no means proficient yet). I learned Hiragana and Katakana first (2 writing systems). I also supplemented that with kanji, all the while listening to Japanese speak. I know lots of words and phrases in Japanese but don't necessarily know how to write them. Do not try to write everything you know how to say... Getting a grasp on speaking will be loads faster than learning the writing system, I've learned that from experience. Definitely check out some videos from the youtube channel:
http://www.youtube.com/user/JapanSocietyNYC

This will help you learn phrases and generally how to speak... My last recommendation is a great site, actually the best one I've found. They have their own style of teaching so here it is:
http://www.japanesepod101.com/

This site is absolutely HUGE and i'm confident if you spent time on it you could become fairly fluent quickly...

So in short, if you want to *JUST* read, first learn Hiragana and Katakana
If you want to *JUST* speak, forego the writing systems, check out japanesepod101 and the JapaneseSocietyNYC and learn from there.
And lastly for both, learn the Writing systems on your own, supplement in Kanji at your own pace, and make use of both japanesepod101 and the youtube channel!

Well that was rather long winded but that's about all I've got...

Wait i just remembered a great site for learning Hiragana and Katakana (don't use the site for kanji though)

http://www.memrise.com/courses/english/japanese-4/

Whew i swear that is all i have!

Go ahead and follow Suiko's link and you should get plenty of help! Unsurprisingly lots of people on CR want to learn Japanese so there has been lots of discussion around it.

On the aside the best way to learn any language really is Rosetta Stone software... it just sort of costs a lot

Thanks for using the CR forums and best of luck with your studies!
