I feel like I should know this, or at least know where to find the answer, but I haven't found explicit answers anywhere so I'm finally just going to come right out and ask.

1. Does clicking on "Reply" in a particular post do anything different than "Post Reply" at the top of the topic page or scrolling to the bottom and just entering a reply there? If not, then is it just there in every post for convenience (so one doesn't have to scroll to the top or bottom in order to add to a thread)?

2. I figured out a while ago that if you select Quote and then "Quote Selected" and then actually delete all the quoted part including the quote tags that the person whose quote was originally selected will still get a notification that they were quoted (as long as you actually add something and post after you've edited out the quote). I also know that you can select multiple posts for quoting so that you can use a single post to quote multiple other posts--as long as they are all on the same page. What I haven't figured out about quoting is how to use a single post to quote posts that are on different pages while still notifying all people quoted that they have been quoted. Is there a way to do that?

3. Is there reason to use the "Rate this forum post as spam" function rather than simply using "Report to Moderator" to report spam? I'm thinking especially in cases where something is pretty obviously spam. Does it annoy the mods when users user "Report to Moderator" instead of the "rate as spam" option?

Did you get a mail notification for the quote? Or did you get a mail notification for when someone posts in a thread you started?

The quoting multiple pages as far as I know requires multiple tabs, I'll usually quote all the ones I need from page one, then go to page 2 on a separate tab and click "quote" to the 1 post, copy it, and paste it back to the first tab. Usually most reply, so I think it notifies them? not 100% though :S

Did this notify you btw? It's after I edited the quote into it.

I received no CR notifications about this at all--I just saw it because I browse the Help threads and use beardfist's chrome extension to follow some things.

Does one usually receive notification when someone posts in a thread one starts? If so, I don't think I've got that option turned on. I haven't started many threads, and I haven't really taken much notice of what happens when people reply in them without quoting me, but I don't have any recollections of getting notification other than when people do quote me.

ETA: Okay, I just checked my notifications settings, and there is no notification option for when someone posts in a thread you started. Also, I've got every notification option turned on, including email notifications, except for the one for emailing about getting a guest pass.

Ok, that was weird... I got 4 separate notifications for this same post...

Allow me to explain how the quoting notification system works. The quote link for the post that I am quoting is this

http://www.crunchyroll.com/quoteforumpost?id_list[]=43555253

This page contains the normal RpcApiForum_CreatePost form that is on thread pages with the contents of the quoted post and one extra thing:

<input type="hidden" name="quoted_fp_id_list[]" value="43555253">

This hidden input is what is responsible for sending you a notification. Quoting multiple posts just adds one of these inputs for each post, so you can easily quote posts from 2 or more pages by getting the post ID and adding it onto the list like this:

http://www.crunchyroll.com/quoteforumpost?id_list[]=43555253&id_list[]=43555433

As for the reply buttons, they all do the same thing which is scroll down and focus on the reply box.

Nope. No notice. Per beardfist's explanation, it seems there some hidden text not included when one simply cuts and pastes the stuff that's visible when you "Quote selected."

The Amazing Lorreen! telepathically communicated:

Actually, the "post ID" is still there when you "Quote select," so u should receive a notification. I tested it out on myself and it worked. I also tried grabbing the "post ID" from another thread and it worked as well. You should be receiving a notification about this post even though I changed your name too! xD If u don't, might be some kind of bug with your account? Maybe u can try turning that particular notification setting off and then back on?

Also, it seems that if u use the reply box at the bottom (with the "post IDs" and all), it doesn't seem to send anyone a notification, or at least I don't think so (as it didn't work when I tried it out on myself). It also doesn't work if u "edit" it into your initial post. What I usually do is just delete my original post and re-post again, if I decide to later quote someone. xP Although, there does appear to be a 1hr time limit for us to delete our post before it becomes set in stone.

Lastly, do u receive notifications about other things, like PMs or guest book messages?

This never got answered. Now that you're a mod, can you answer it yourself?

It does not annoy us. In fact if something clearly needs immediate attention, please, please report to moderators before a gazillion of those obvious spam posts flood every single forum thread!

It appears that what the "report as spam" link does is just increment some little counter, and after enough "report as spam" (not sure of the exact number) clicks, crunchybot dutifully lets us know about it. (I have only seen that happen once, and it was on a years-old post that was nothing like spam).
