i work normal shifts but the managers at my work sometimes work 12 hour shifts. i want to climb up the ladder and make more money but not if i have to spend all my time at work like they do. they look so stressed.

Yeah I've done loads of 12 hour shifts. Some weeks I was doing 12 hours monday to friday, then one day doing 10pm while 10am shifts then being expected back into work that same day at 2pm for the 2-10 shift.

Pretty sure a lot of the crap I put up with is illegal but I happily go along with it for the money. Didn't take much of a toll on my body or stress levels really, I'm practically insomniac anyway, but the loss of free time can be depressing. You come home and don't feel like doing anything, going out, seeing friends and stuff, not even playing a game because the 2 hour session you had planned isn't enough time inbetween doing house chores and cooking/cleaning.

yeah, the good thing is i am nocturnal. i have never been a sun worshiper. so i did not miss it that much. the hard part comes in when you spend no time with others because you are too busy working. if you can find the balance there is no problem...

Nah, you could legally work 24/7 as long as you get overtime pay and get a 15 minute break for every 4 hours (I think). Exceptions include trucking where they ban tired drivers which is really DUMB (and for the record Canadian drivers are allowed to work for two hours more than US drivers.)

I never knew that do they provide a bed to nap during those 15 mins lol?

I work 40-45 hours a week, sometimes a longer shift (~10-13 hours).
I don't actually mind doing it, more money etc... you know the benefits.

But if I have to leave early because of something, that's possible too and someone else will take over the longest shift. So its all really-well planned.

Pretty sure it's illegal in the UK to be made to work more than 12 hours in a single shift, and work 2 different 8 hour shifts in one day without an 8 hour break inbetween.

Since the shift pattern in most places is 6am-2pm, 2pm-10pm, 10pm-6am, if you worked 10pm-6am, you could legally be allowed back at 2pm, but obviously if you were forced overtime like I was, I'm legally not allowed to come back after potentially 3-4hours maximum sleep to work another 8 hours.

Private businesses and self employment might be different but generally in large work places there are rules in place to protect workers health.

I remember working the 8-9hour shifts at night (5pm-1;2am).
I had chest pains the mornings after.

I'm sure the night shifts take a toll on your body, specially when you're not used to it.

I work ten hours monday - friday doing a lot of walking, lifting airplane parts which can weigh between 15lbs to 150 lbs. and then we may have to work 6 hours on saturday. I am trying to find a way better job that involves working just 40 hours a week instead of 50+ a week. I come home and just want to fall asleep or no do anything and on the weekend I don't want to do anything but sleep. Sometimes I may fall asleep watching anime...terrible But I really have no life now like I did when I was working in the office which is what I'm going to try and get again.
