So, HBO is in Talks with the renowned director Guillermo Del Toro to Adapt faithfully from the 18 volume Manga 'Monster' into a TV series.

Del Toro will be co-writing with Stephen Thompson (best known for his writing on Doctor Who and Sherlock.) The project was originally planned for a feature film, but proved too complicated to fit into a normal feature-length time frame. Del Toro was eventually able to convince Naoki Urasawa, the author of Monster, to talk to HBO about a TV series instead.

As far as we know the whole of first season has been scripted and read by Naoki Urasawa himself and he approves.
As well as the script of the pilot episode sent to HBO for confirmation, so it at a very advanced stage.

To me Monster is one of the only few Anime/Manga adaptions that would actually make it in Hollywood along with maybe Death Note (Maybe?).

- The plot is one of the best out of ANYTHING in the world and I think western audiences will be stunned.
- Monster is very realistic so, hardly any supernatural situations occur (SO no CGI will be used)
- HBO is renowned for it use of nudity, violence, quality and character driven pieces. (Perfect for Monster)
- Mainly western characters, so cast won't be too difficult.

However I have few doubts;

- The setting. Will they keep the German setting or will they change to an American atmosphere to cater to western American audiences.

- The main gripe undoubtedly is the casting of Tenma!!!! WIll they go for an Asian actor or completely white wash it like many Hollywood adaptions. (Monster could be the first platform for an Asian male lead)

- Also cross-dressing!!!! xD

I am absolutely excited about this!!! If it all goes well it could be another Game of Thrones!!!!

Though less explictly titled, there's already a thread about this, so you might want to comment there:

I love this anime and think it will make a good live action. So sad I don't get HBO though
