WSJ #9 Preview:

Okay, now I'm really worried about World Trigger. No news on when it will come back, and even if it comes back, there's a possibility that this will affect its slowly rising popularity. Well, I wish Daisuke a healthy recovery.

EDIT: The World Trigger break is only a one week break.

Ouch, that really sucks for him. How he broke it, is beyond me
I hope makes a healthy recovery, too.
Btw how long does it take for a new series to get ranked? Because Iron Knight still didn't get a ranking. Even though the rankings are rigged. But still, this has been bothering me for days now.

What most people go by is 8 chapters/ 8 issues. I won't say the rankings are not rigged, but at the same time I won't say they are rigged. There are multiple factors they take into consideration for these ToC placements. The readers' survey is one of them, but it's not the only factor. It all comes down to the Editor in Chief and IMO that's the best choice most of the time. Whoever earns that position, earned it for a reason. I'll back up my statement by saying, this is definitely one of the reasons why Shueisha is the most successful manga company, and WSJ is the most popular manga magazine.

Well if you look at it that way, it makes sense. He is the moderator after all, and his job is to makes sure everything is balanced out, huh?
I get it, so they're not rigged at all, it's just the Editor in Chief doing his job.

Pretty regular rankings this week. Kind of disappointed to see Kuroko at only number 7, but I'm pleasantly surprised to see Naruto back at #2. Overall, I'm content and unsurprised.

So you're telling me that Isobe at the top didn't surprise you?
I knew it was popular with Japanese readers, but I didn't expect it to be this popular. I really want to read it. For some reason Sasaki recommended Isobe and some other relatively new Jump series to western fans. This makes me think that there is a slight possibility for it to have an official English release, though I wouldn't hold my breath for it.

Eh, it did catch me off guard a bit. I'd like to read it eventually as well.

Also hope World Trigger's Daisuke makes a speedy recovery. Breaking any bone is no fun, especially if it's in your hand and you're a mangaka for a living.

Damn. Beelzebub in last place this week. Nice cover for Naruto's 15th anniversary though. Anyone else disappointed that Kishimoto is already taking a break when the mangaka just had winter vacation?

Yes, but I'm confused right now, I think either the issue number, or the dates are wrong... The Anniversary cover, was on today's update of the latest chapter. And Jump came out in Japan on Tuesday, or was it Monday... Which is either the 21st or the 20th.

I think it's just a general anniversary date. Pretty sure Shonen Jump has changed release date days since '99; it's been fifteen years since then.

The chapter updates you're talking about are illegal updates. Jump comes out in Japan on Mondays, sometimes on Saturdays if there is a national holiday on Monday. Thus, the updates you're talking about don't get officially released until Monday which is the 27th, and that is the latest ToC rankings posted. Some people in Japan get to buy the issues before they are released and they post the ToC along with the chapters illegally online.

Why do the shounen jump ranking matter? Why should people care about them? How long have the ranking been around? Is there a subjective bias? If so what is it?

The rankings determine whether a series will survive or will it end. So for people who like to check out new series, they want to check the rankings and see if a new series they like is being received positively by the Japanese fans and editors. If a new series does bad in the rankings it will end (canceled) immediately. For well established series, they are given a long chance to try and get better in the rankings. If they continue on doing bad, Shueisha gives those series a good amount of time to tie any loose ends, wrap up the story and end it naturally.

Weekly Shonen Jump has always been strict with the rankings. The rankings have probably been around from the beginning. If you check a list of series that were published in WSJ, you will see a lot of series that ended with around 10 chapters.

What people need to understand is that the rankings they see are not solely dependent on the readers' survey though it is a major factor. There are many factors they take into consideration. The Editor in Chief has the final word. I wouldn't call that a subjective bias, as the Editor in Chief is the man responsible for insuring that the magazine does good. As much as people like to complain about the strict decisions for new series, I can argue that most of the time it's the right decision. WSJ is the most popular manga magazine. It has produced most of the really successful series, One Piece, Dragon Ball, Naruto, Slam Dunk, to name a few. Basically, the Editor in Chief was appointed this position because of his experience and capability of doing his job.
