media in america is now corporate...........major media outlets have the ability to stuff propaganda and useless news down the throats of the american people because they can, and dont have any real competitiors to stop them. btw alot of people buy that tabloid shit so as to make themselves feel better about themselves, to live vicariously, or to just plain distract themselves from their shit lives. if you are ignorant of what goes on around you, how would you stop unless somebody else gives you a slap of reality? i mean even if you do know about things like Rwanda (even though that event has come to pass) and the genocide in Darfur, what are you doing about it? you can spout all of this "omg save drafur!" deal but unless you're doing something about it you're the same as the fools who dont know anything arent you? because inaction is also action, and besides, ignorance is not just a problem that can be solved over night. no matter how you put it, people will not want to be force-fed anything, and many people are afraid of new things, even if that new thing is just news, so they stick to their trusted 7 o'clock basic cable newsperson to give them the news, theyre not gonna be so not-lazy and find out things for themselves, noooooo~~~~ they just want to be told what they want to hear, cause major national-broadcast news is just as much entertainment as regular shows nowadays ~_^......i mean bright lights, hot newscaster chicks, car chases, unsolved murders, AND OF COURSE FUCKING HELICOPTERS WOOOOOOO..... ...........anyways.......................all in all, im just saying alot of people dont want to step out of their comfort zone, and its their right as human beings not to, although they could prevent deaths of fellow human beings, what obligation do they have to people they've never met? ..............oh well so yeah thats my two cents(now equal to 2 canadian cents! the horror!).

No one cares. If you don't like the media then don't pay attention. It's stupid to take America for granted.

Good opinion. In many i aspects i do agree how the majority of the population wants to be ignorant and rather not deal with what is actually happening in the world. I think most americans are too into themselves, and think that they are more important that anything else thats going on in the world. I do think a lot of our media tries to keep our society(in the us) ignorant. But there are also a steady growing group of people aware of such things that are happening. I do hate how we turn to look the other ay when there are horrific things going on around the world. Having that said, there are many injustices and many things wrong here at home and we need to confront that sort of thing before anything so we will be better equip to handle the problems outside of our nation. For one thing our education system in some places is a joke. We fix the education system and more aware intelligent people will sprout so we can try to make this world a better place.

(i know i ended the whole thing pretty cheesy, and im not sure if i made any sense.)

I think people really need to look at the whole picture and do more thorough research than from info you got from some Youtube videos, online articles, discussions with friends, something you read in a magazine, or even from a class you had. Everyone thinks they're an expert in something once they took a class or head something from their teacher. Taking PSY 1001 doesn't make you B.F. Skinner and the same goes for other courses and subject matters.

The first thing I thought of when I read the thread was that I've been to countries that don't even know what's going on outside their country (AT ALL). Yes, you can also say that the US has the resources to have more information so we should all be more informed. But isn't it really up to each person to keep up to date on current world affairs? I was raised in the US and keep up with it. But then again, you all know about discussions on how the media is biased or doesn't give factual information at times (not just the US).

Also, MSNBC or CNN aren't really that bad with news coverage. Yes, they also compete with ratings but they provide adequate information and coverage on world, political, and economic affairs. They also time what they air in accordance with when what type of people watch the news and when people have free time according to their age, career, lifestyle demographics. It would also be considered to be unfair to tell them to not air social/entertainment aspects to their news since it is a part of news in our lives.

Of course, the majority of the US doesn't watch CNN or MSNBC. They'll watch their FOX, local news stations, CBS, or some other source. We have to keep in mind that these are businesses, so a person has to realize that these are news/entertainment.

Is the US focused on entertainment and other aspects of social life within out nation more than it probably should be? Yes. Is it due to being overly ignorant or being unintelligent? I don't think so. I believe any country living in the same comfortable situation as the US with a booming entertainment industry will be the same. Not to mention, it's probably easier for the government to actively run about its business without worrying about the masses since most of them are busy with their own little things. People cry for freedom and democracy. This is what you get when you really allow people to do whatever they want. The powerful get even more powerful (media, entertainment, business, etc.). So, who are we supposed to blame? Our parents? Their parents? Ourselves?

I don't think those two have any correlation. Our government is some 9 trillion dollars in debt, all the money the celebrities have does little to offset that debt. America is a capitalist society, there will never be equality of wealth. The US government however, has fallen from the limelight in recent years. It seems like everything our country was founded on has turned sour, the general population doesn't care about government anymore. No one cares that our government prints out money like nothing, that we are being forced to pay illegal taxes, or that the federal reserve isn't even run by the government. America is falling on its face because the people who should really be running the democracy either don't care, or don't know whats really going on. RON PAUL 08'
