I've noticed that on Crunchyroll the video tends to become very dark and washed out when the content is really (for lack of a better word) dynamic. For example, action packed scenes where each frame varies from the last by a great deal (openers / fight scenes). When the video would compress well (talking heads / long fixed shots) the color is natural. I assume this is because compressing and streaming the dynamic video takes more data and more bandwidth so the videos are being washed out to improve compression, and thus stream better. I always dismissed this before because my Internet connection wasn't too great but now I am on a 100Mb/s download connection and it still happens. A big offender is the Attack on Titan opener - it gets extremely dark and washed out towards the end.

I am not sure if this is a bug or a suggestion, but I would like to see this artifact addressed at least for fast connections where I assume the "natural" color could stream without hiccups. Thanks for taking the time to read this and despite this issue I really enjoy Crunchyroll.

Thanks for the reply.

You know what, maybe this is all in my head...
I went to get some screenshots and was comparing the footage from other releases of the same episodes and I guess the footage itself is just dark. Maybe its a stylistic thing that I don't get since I could have sworn I've seen this multiple shows during really dynamic segments. Anyway sorry for not comparing the footage beforehand.

I think I know what you're talking about, the problem is definitely not in your head but I don't believe CR has anything to do with it. As you've found upon comparing, most of the time the problem also exists in the TV broadcasts. This is simply a problem with the sources and the only real way around it is to buy/watch the DVDs/Blu-rays.

In general CR is very good at preserving the natural colors of the source they are given (Funimation is horrible at it, but that's another story). There are actually a few cases where the TV broadcasts becomes really washed out in those scenes while CR's stream is fine (Dog Days 2 is a perfect example).

The Attack on Titan opening example is a bit tricky, the color in the animation of the chorus is a little bit washed out but the overly dark scene towards the end seems to be a stylistic choice.
