I tried watching SAO because I heard good things about it. Once it started I was like ok cool an anime with a girl charcter that is not totally useless. Then I could not bear to watch it because Asuna just became so totally 2 dimensional. I mean she quit the guild so she could become a house wife. And she just doesn't become stronger like Kirito. Then it became way to fan servicy. Is there any anime that doesn't treat its girl characters like crap? This is why I like attack on titan. The girl characters wear the same stuff as the guys and they arent useless. Asuna felt like nothing more than a plot device to further the development of Kirito.

Dude, watch out... talking bad about SAO is equivalent to burying your own grave.

My Little Monster is a good example of an anime where the female character is not one-dimensional. It's shoujo though.

I have the same gripes with Shin Sekai Yori, to be honest.

The best possible counterexample would probably be Motoko Kusanagi from anything Ghost in the Shell, though. Even though she's pretty heavily sexualized by the way she dresses, it just enhances her solidarity and independence.

Edit: In any case, if you're looking for recommendations try posting here and I'm sure you'll get a bunch.

seriously, why all the hate on SAO. SAO is one of the best anime in the last couple of years. asuna is the moon and the stars, and kirito is the sun. of you want anime with strong fems, try clamore or skip beat. jormagand

Nah, Queen's Blade is all about the plot. Nothing else in it worth seeing.

So far; a lot is riding on the ending though I think. But hell yes, Rune Balot kicks ass.

And for something entirely different, there's Chihaya from Chihayafuru.

how does this sound for a great anime. a cast of all female warriors all fighting in a giant tournament to determine who will be the next ruler of the world. Their motivations are all their own. they never need to be saved by a male, and even the strongest warriors in the world are female. sounds like a perfect anime for you right? what beautiful anime is this?

Edit: maybe you can give sao another try asuna is the whole reason for the second arc. without her there would be no story.

Honestly, that sounded terribly flat and cliche before I even opened the spoiler tag.

As soon as you define a character by being female you've already lost.

Not sure if serious... how Asuna is treated in the second cour is practically character abuse.

OP doesn't want strong female characters. She wants something not 2-dimensional... figuratively... not literally. And wears the same clothes as males.

Uhhh excuse me MR.OP but did you know that Asuna was and still is stronger than Kirito? To be honest one of the main reasons why the second arc was so god awful was because they took a powerful character and turned her into a damsel in distress. But seriously though Asuna is a better fighter than Kirito, she is way faster and more agile than him

But seeing that the opening post doesn't leave me with a question to answer or a topic to discuss I guess I'll say is that I find a lot of newer anime very uninteresting and annoying. The only shows I watched in all of these seasons of late 2012 and early/mid 2013 were Sword Art Online,BTOOOM! and Attack On Titan.

EDIT: For kick ass girls see Black Lagoon, the Fate Series,Tsukihime, Kara No Kyoukai etc. All have strong female leads
