I don't think the manga got very far, but I read the translated light novels of No. 6 and absolutely loved it. Then, I saw the anime and was highly disappointed. They should have made it into a 25-26 episode series and left so much information out that it was obnoxious. Sure, it had pretty animation, but that only gets you so far. There were so many plot holes----things they left out for no good reason at all.

Samurai Deeper Kyo...It really didn't follow the manga much at all. The anime should be rebooted and include the later volumes of the manga too!

While I still enjoyed the anime Freezing and it's sequel Freezing: Vibration was really disappointed at the violence tonedown in both Seasons.

Season 1 was the fight with Myabi

Season 2 was the fight with Chiffon:

Planetes - almost everything they added to the anime (and they added a lot) detracted from the original story, from the "comedy" characters to the dumb terrorism plot. The last episode especially was a travesty.

The main reason they deviate from manga is either because they make the anime when the manga has only gone so far, or the manga has gone farther but not far enough to make it a cohesive "beginning middle end" type segment.

After all, most of the time when something is adapted into an anime it's basically just advertising for the original medium, whether it was a visual novel, manga, light novel, or something else. There's obviously major exceptions, of course.

Also, the two mediums are different so a pure adaptation from manga to anime or vice versa usually looks odd in some places. Look at Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - it's a good example. I liked the first one adaptation better, personally.

Another example - look at Chrono Crusade. The ending for the anime was different from the manga, but it still worked nicely in and of itself. When an adaptation doesn't deviate from the source material in some way - then I'd be a little worried.

I can't believe I just read this...

How could you possibly like the first anime adaption better than the second??? It had one of the worst anime endings I have ever seen. Brotherhood was so epic for the whole anime. I have seen hundreds of anime and like virtually every genre (besides yaoi) and I would say Brotherhood is in my top 10 favorite while FMA 1 is quite low on my complete list. I could understand if you just didn't like it that much - people have different tastes and all, but how could you say the first adaption is better?

"Wow how could you possibly have an opinion that's different from mine? How dare you think for yourself!"

And here friends we have a prime example of why, even through I LOVE FMA to death, I can't stand most of the fandom. It's widely made up of people who are elitist about one version of the anime over the other, and HEAVEN FORBID you disagree with them.

At the moment the anime adaptation that's bothering me the most is Attack on Titan. The animation quality is great, and it starts out pretty faithful to the manga, but towards the end of season one the anime writers start arbitrarily shoving the Eren/Mikasa ship down everyone's throat, going as far as to take Armin out in scenes where he was there in the manga and replace him with Mikasa.
I get the desire to pair up the main guy and main girl it makes an easy romance subplot to sell but when you have to rearrange which characters go in which scene you're grossly misinterpreting the mangaka's work.

Mahou Sensei Negima!

Unfortunately Negi takes a while to warm up. It doesn't get really good until the school festival arc which starts around vol 8 - 9 of the Manga. They changed a few things and only animated vol like 1-6. If they had animated everything after vol 9 faithfully, it would have been a wonderful anime.

The one other problem though is, Akamatsu really rushed the end of the manga. He decided to end the manga during a transition. Essentially the last arc in the manga sets up for what you would expect to be the final big arc, but instead Akamatsu just skips the final big arc, and pretty much ends the story with a simple, "And they lived happily ever after, the end." type of ending. Definitely a poor choice.

Not the point of this thread, short doesn't justify bad.

And having watched and read AirGear picking up directly after the anime.. i strongly disagree.
