And there you have the "core" story of TWGOK. IMHO.

I'd argue the line from the season 2 intro fits in way better for the main theme.
"Such a pain the ideal vs. the real"

That has been a theme through most of the manga, yet Keima's growth didn't truly start happening until the Goddess Arc, which was nearly halfway through the manga.

That said, Keima becoming human is definitely important in the two more recent arcs.

After the heartbreak, I think there's still hope for you Chihiro fans, the manga certainly hints that Chihiro and Keima's story isn't over yet.

Manga spoilers

2. If that is is the case, I hate to say it (I can hear the flames cracking), but Chihiro set herself up for what happened. It would be completely reasonable to expect an initial rejection after the way she's treated him in the past if you exclude the conquest. Keima is a bit harsh, but perhaps subconsciously he wants to distance her from the real physical threat to the girls associated with him at this point.

2. Oh yes, very much her fault. I still feel very sorry for her because lets face it, he *did* lead her on and probably even does like her.

Ugh, that episode pissed me off... I know he has to go wake up the last goddess inside Ayumi, but he didnt need to be such a heartless asshole about it. If I had a girl like her chasing after me, I sure wouldn't ditch her, I'd try to do something to get us together and still try to get the other goddesses woke up.

Last episode was well adapted from the manga , it was as heartbreaking to see chihiro get heartbroken after such a big confession. It was hard for me to watch as it was for me to read in the manga. The fact that she liked him without having loose soul in her heart even astonished him. Poor chihiro, but he did fall really bad. 3 more episodes I wonder how far will they go in the arc.
