Chihiro/Ayumi arc in season 3 was the only thing I enjoyed. I didn't enjoy the fact that this season was butchered just so that the producers can get to the "good part" of the manga while sacrificing the back stories of 2-3 of the goddesses.

That alone made me make the following rank for the seasons: 2 > 1 > 3

Season 2 had the best arc, aka Chihiro's arc that basically emphasizes the whole theme of the show: real vs ideal, normal vs extraordinary and how these may not be as black and white as Keima paints it.

Though seasons 1 and 3 are interchangeable on the sole basis of the feels of Chihiro's arc in season 3.

The things that made 3 better than 2 (or 1) for me are the raised stakes and Keima's character growth. Keima was a borderline annoying character in the first 2 seasons and I found the episodes without a conquer target kind of hard to watch. We are supposed to be laughing at the main character, not taking him seriously. In season 3 he reacts to the new challenges and threats and raises his game. He hardly plays his beloved galge and is much more serious. He uses his brain more in season 3, as the only other seriously mentally challenging route to that point in the series was Chihiro. I like Keima as the Sherlockesque (BBC) badass more than I like Keima as the game obsessed egomaniac. It is a shame that they skipped so much. I would love to see some OVAs to fill in the gaps, and since the series is pretty successful it may actually happen.

I can see how people would enjoy season 3 more due to, as others have said and what you kind of suggest, the more serious tone because its not a "game" anymore and people's lives were at stake.

Honestly, I'm just jaded at this point due to my wanting the show to be a more faithful adaptation.

I'd like to see an OVA series too, a season 2.5 perhaps? lol

I'm not sure what the sales for the new season is like though, don't know where to check the numbers. I remember that the first two seasons weren't so hot which is why it took the third season a while.

I looked it up and the Manga is popular, but the anime is not for some reason. There probably just isn't enough fan service to sell BDs.

I bookmarked this thread when someone else linked to it on CR. It appears to compile sales information, and summarizes it an organized format. However, the site is down right at the moment, so that link will just lead to a maintenance page.

I did get curious though, so I checked a cached version of that page (cached 12/21/13, post last edited 12/19/13). For average sales per volume, season 1 was 3,000; season 2 was 2,117; and season 3 was 1,617. Not many shows with sales near 2000 get a sequel, and I didn't notice any below 2000 when I glanced through (there's probably one or two exceptions to that rule). I've seen others say the break even mark is somewhere around 2,000 - 3,000 typically. I thought we were lucky to get a season 3, and I'm not holding my breath for season 4.

I'll also note that high sales number don't always mean another season is upcoming immediately (I'm just mad at recent info implying they will not be animating any more Raildex soon. Index season 2 had 16,000 including re-release, where is Index III?!?).

And I'm derailing the topic a bit more, but I'll add in the top sellers too (does not include any shows that aired before 2000).

I wonder why people like the Bakemonogatari Anime its by far the most random anime with some of the most stupid choices of background and 80% of the anime is people talking with no action while the other 20% is the main character getting destroyed by girls or crabs people have no taste nowadays.

It was my understanding that they skipped to the Goddess Arc for season 3 because they knew they weren't going to get a season 4. So they wanted to do the "best" arc.

Still sad though. Hopefully it'll live on in OVAs.

Edit: Getting a little off topic here, but I remember the author trying to get off the ground a spin-off with Kanon as a magical girl. Does anybody know if that got any traction besides the short three-parter in the manga?

I'll disagree to a point. I found Keima's character great in the early seasons, and they were pivotal in how we saw his character in the last.

Part of the reason relied on the time-frame. I've only seen a bit of the Manga myself, but each person he meets changes him. Unlike the girls who forget, he remembers. Keima is not the same at the end of each relationship, and this is a growth of his character.

We skipped a section of the growth, and dear god how slow did he grow, but that lead him to the person presented in Season 3. He's less attatched but more social, if that makes sense.

Keima is no longer in the world of his video games, but he IS trapped in the world of Ghosts'n'shit. He's spending his days conquering girls in an elaborate plan of epic proportions, and he's just as sucked into this new world as the last, only he isn't happy as happy here.

He's essentially reached Stage 2 of 3 in Character Development.

I also believe that TWGOK's has rather decent sales outside of Japan, and depending on the progress of the Manga, we are likely to get a 4th Season or OVA's to fill in the gaps.

Kiema's story isnt' done, but I'm sure they want to tell it to us. We just have to wait until the story is there to tell.
