This sounds like my experience with World of Warcraft.

MMO's have a way of sucking you in like that don't they? Video games in general are bad enough (how did I ever enjoy playing Madden?), but add other people and a community to the mix, and it becomes frighteningly easy to convince yourself you'll have fun doing really not a whole lot more than clicking and staring at a screen (although I have had some cool conversations as a result).

So what happens when you take a step back and discuss about the hype like... this thread.

I always tend to miss the hype for anything. I was one of the original fans of digimon & pokemon, funny how no-one talked to me until they wanted to know more about the series. Ungrateful people cos they wanted help, yet they never thanked me, they then acted as if I knew nothing about it and even tried to steal my stuff as a means to prove their skills/knowledge.

Ironic, considering they were ultimately defeated because of their bragging. Their greed & distrust ultimately caused their downfall.
Also ironic that as the hype faded, they pretended as if they never liked them.

Weirdly I sort of missed the SAO hype. Though I got to be one of the people cheering for the manga announcement at mcm this year. I loved how when I got to ask my question at mcm, everyone was over-talking me. The question was when would Sword Art Online be in the uk?
The crowd went silent at the name and then the applause and cheering for the question, never thought I'd start that level of hype with a few words.

I also get myself hyped with some shows, by doing marathons in the run up to new eps.

Ultimately, I choose what to watch from my own interest & i'm always willing to try anything new after reading/knowing the premise of it. It's only after I start watching/reading said story that I see any kind of hype. Harry potter was the only kind of hype that seems to never stop.

I normally follow-up on the hype and watch an episode or two. If I like the show, I'll hop on the bandwagon and keep watching. If I don't, then I just don't watch. I don't watch an anime just because it's what's "in" at the moment, but it's popularity does cause me to at least see what all the fuss is about.

Even if there is Hype about a show I try if it fits my viewing interests. On the flip-side of the coin I have watched shows that were panned before I viewed them and totally liked them. For example there is a lot of Hate Hype toward short animes which turned out great.Length dont always make good anime.

I look at the plot, give it 2-3 episodes to get interesting and then if I don't like it, I move on.

Although I have been biased with Hunter x Hunter, I just can't get over the cast and style.

I never hype an anime, although I do fervently recommend anime that I personally find exceptional (but not something currently airing).

Similarly, I never ride "the hype wave" only because i'm always true to what I like, and most of what I like isn't terribly popular. However, hype will cause me to check out a show (such as Attack on Titan or SAO), but i always take the hype with a grain of salt.

Take Attack on Titan as an example. I checked that out because it was hyped to no end. I found myself greatly enjoying it, but I have now lost substantial interest in it after episode 8. In terms of my personal favorites of the season, it's not even in my top 3. I still enjoy it, but ride completely against the hype wave (well maybe not against, but perhaps at a large angle lol)

Bottom line: I never follow the hype. Anime preferences are a matter of opinion, and I trust my own opinion more than the masses lol

*Points to backlog. When I get that mountain under control, THEN I'll pay attention to hype. Maybe.

I tend not to most of the time. I can't pass up Free! though obvious reasons I'm sure.

SnK has an insane fandom that I enjoy following, they come up with hilarious titan parodies and redo the opening in the craziest ways. I don't think it's the best anime this season, but it lives up far more to the hype than SAO ever did for me personally. I find for me, the more a show is hyped, the more I tend to be let down most of the time >.<

(again it's just personal opinion, any time someone comes out and says they didn't like SAO people flip a bitch lol)

Nyarko-san: Another Crawling Chaos. Get past the annoying protagonist, and it's one of the best comedies out there.

No, I don't jump on the hype wagon. Mainly because for new anime I wait until the whole season is over before I watch it. This is because I don't like following up on an anime and then waiting a week for new episodes to be released. My preference is marathoning my anime. So, because of this, the hype is long gone by the time I get to the "new" anime.
