How this came about:
So there was a "mascot character" contest for my local anime club. This was my submission, and thankfully it succeeded. So now, I occasionally update the anime club's facebook cover with a new drawing of this character.

How I named this character:
At the time, I just named her "Chihaya" (I'm a big fan of Chihayafuru), but just recently I finally gave her a full name "Chihaya Izumi" (inspired by the character Konata Izumi from Lucky Star).

Anime characters that inspired the making of this charatcer:
Concerning the character's attitude, I wanted to give her a sense of energy and zeal like the leader of our anime club has. I also had Kanbaru (Bakemonogatari) and Hibiki (Idolm@ster) in mind for this character since they're both very outgoing and energetic characters. Konata (Lucky Star) was another inspiration because of how much she epitomizes the definition of "otaku", lol.

How I do my art:
For the art itself, I normally sketch with a mechanical pencil, then scan it to the computer, and do all the line-art and coloring with Paint Tool SAI.
Sometimes I also use Photoshop for finishing effects or text-based visuals.

I'll post the later versions I made of this character below this post! :D

But for now, here's the original version:
(from 3/8/12)

Anime club's business card...

Shortly after this character was accepted as the the anime club's mascot, I was asked to make a drawing of her that could be printed in B&W on a card that promoted the anime club.
I used a scene from the Nichijou OP as reference for her pose.

End of Summer in 2012...

I did a few practice sketches after that last drawing, but I hadn't actually done any more actual finished work of this character, for months. Time had just flown by apparently.
So I had an idea to help better establish her as the anime club's mascot: make new drawings of her to update the anime club's facebook cover for each season or special holiday.

So I started making one for that summer. I have to admit though, I definitely rushed to get it finished, because summer was actually about to end soon; and I wanted this picture to be relevant for at least a couple weeks :P

I also tried to change up her hair style.................yeah...better luck next time, lol.

Have you ever sketched something that seemed pretty good on paper, but once you re-drew it on the computer, it looked like crap?
That's how I felt about this particular drawing in retrospect. I was even aware of it while I was drawing it, but like I said, I was rushing, lol.

Social network...

I was asked to make a facebook icon for the anime club by incorporating Chihaya into the icon somehow.

The club leader gave me some examples such as a cat hanging off the side of a facebook logo, so I used that as reference to make this iteration of the facebook logo. I also changed the icon's original blue color to match the color of her shirt.
I also gave her cat ears for this logo as an omage to the reference I used. Nekomimi-mode!

Staple staple...

So this drawing was done for the Fall season and also part of an idea I had for bringing a sense of Halloween to the anime club's facebook page once the time was right. There were other ideas suggested such as giving her different costumes each week or something, but that was kinda too much of a request for me personally. I'm lazy, okay? --__--

The art style for this was heavily inspired by the art in Bakemonogatari. I continued with changing her hair style for the sake of staying fresh with the character design and not being just the same thing (same = boring). I think that this hair style (unlike the last one from that past summer) doesn't suck, lol.

Chill'n while the snow falls...

So unlike most of my holiday-related drawings ever, I started on this pretty early and took my time coloring it, especially the background.
This was for the winter and I wanted to give the sense of relaxing and warmth of the indoors, away from the frigid weather just outside the windows.

When I was thinking about how to draw a pose that displayed relaxation, I remembered a scene from Lucky Star where Kagami was lying on the carpet while reading a book. I also had the art style from Chu-2 Koi in mind, mainly for the eyes and the overall shading.
I also decided to draw a close-up of a cat sleeping on a dresser, to emphasize that sense of comfort and chill'n.

Two birds with one...

At the end of my third semester, for one of my finals, I had to make a graphic that could be pressed onto a t-shirt. Well coincidentally, the anime club was asking for designs for club t-shirts. So I figured I could make a design for both my class and the anime club.

I'm not the most familiar with binary shading, but I did what I could to emphasize depth in the character's perspective/angle. The pose for this drawing was inspired by a fight scene that happened during the Hunter Exam arc in Hunter x Hunter (best shounen series currently on TV).

I also wish (in retrospect) that I would've made her head rounder as if a fish lens was looking at her. Other than that, it was fun to draw.

Happy New Year 2013...

This drawing was to celebrate the new year which was also the year of the snake (according to the Chinese zodiac).
Once again, again, I changed up the art style along with her hairstyle. The character design and lighting was influenced by the anime series "Humanity Has Declined". This was also my first time attempting to draw a fancy kimono suitable for the occasion.

That's a thing?...

So apparently there's a holiday in Japan that celebrates the existence of girls having twin-tails........yeah............
Since I could not think of anything to draw at the time (February 2nd), I decided to use that sudden announcement as an excuse to drawing something. So I drew a simple picture of Chihaya with twin-tails on the top-half of her hair at the last minute before the day was over.

Yep, that's the story.

But in all seriousness, I like the brushes used for coloring this picture; and I'm considering using those as a norm for my own personal art style that I'm still trying to develop.

OMG!...

I drew this for the next iteration of the anime club's facebook cover, but I also wanted to draw someone with this pose ever since I saw it during the ending sequence on Tamako Market when it was airing.

I took KyoAni's art style into account for this, and that meant NOT SCREWING UP THE FACE. I had an earlier version of this drawing (that I won't show here ever) where the eyes were just messed up and very sloppy. Thank God my artist OCD kicked in to fix that problem, lol.
I really like how KyoAni has been adding different types of blur effects to their shows recently, so after I finished coloring this on SAI, I went to Photoshop and added the blur effect also.

KyoAni knows how to moe right, and this pose is one of the most (I'm gonna say it) kawaii poses I've ever seen, even from them, lol.

GJ Anime Club...

If you don't get that reference, I'm referring to the anime that I essentially got this art style from, GJ Club.

I really like how vibrant and prominent the character designs are in that show, so I decided to try it out for the anime club's next facebook cover. This was also the point where I finally chose to give her a full name. Chihaya's clothes were slightly changed, like having a weird necklace, a belt strap, and a shorter top. I also changed her ponytail back to one instead of two. I made her ponytail more spaghetti-like just to give it more detail and to go with her energetic self.

I tried to make it look like she was just another one of the main characters of GJ Club being introduced in the show's opening sequence.
The only time I used Photoshop for this picture was to add the text, some lighting and the shadow.

Summer Time! On Time!...

So yeah, this time I wasn't late on drawing something for the summer (in fact this was a couple weeks early).

I've recently been trying to work on making better backgrounds than before, so trying to make a city was both fun and very nerve-racking. I actually finished drawing the character about 3 weeks before even stating on the background. I knew what I wanted to do for the background for weeks (sort of) but I couldn't get myself to make it visual. Procrastination was a huge factor with this one, lol.

For the art style, I choose to try Kantoku's character design style since I've recently become a fan of his art style (which is also why I gave Chihaya's bikini a plaid pattern). The way he shades hair and eyes just looks really cool, something that I really want to master eventually.

Ever since middle school, I had to deal with crazy people asking me to draw perverted crap for them. And I always refused to draw anything ecchi or hentai related (which makes me being a fan of Kantoku's art kinda ironic). But now that I don't have to deal with that anymore, it's not a big deal for me to draw someone wearing something normal like a swimsuit; as long as it's not drawn in a pandering/inappropriate angle. I will not stoop to the level of drawing hentai just to get recognized or sell my art faster, just say'n.

I love it.

Before I came into the thread, I thought that you must be a fan of Chihayafuru and I was right haha. I also like that anime.

Anyway, I think the shading's really good and the black and white one (for the shirt) was great too.

Chihayafuru was in my top 3 shows of 2012 and probably this year as well. It has to get a third season, lol.
