So a common question keeps popping up in my head as days go by. It's what makes a true otaku? What do you need to do to become and or label yourself as an otaku. I've read many things from people saying "Otakus are people that know Anime inside and out" And then others say it has to do with "Either loving video games, Anime, or Manga, but they all have to be associated with Japan or something -_- I'm actually new to Anime, although i've watched a decent amount of show's and I absolutely love them ( Also i've played many Japanese games such as metal gear solid, persona etc etc ) I still don't know what it takes to consider myself a true otaku, an know what it takes for me to label others as otaku too~ If anyone can help me with this it'd be great. Thanks

I'd call myself an otaku but don't get me wrong if u asked me a question like who played this character or who wrote this anime then I wouldn't be able to tell you, but I think it's just someone with a passion for many animes

Do yourself a favour and stop treating it like a badge of honour. If you wanna be a degenerate, go for it.

Someone who avoids meeting people (outside of work or something important), a homebody and has an obsession with something (it doesn't have to be anime, can be games, building something or whatever as long as it's a strong obession).

The above definition fits me very well. The thing is, I've always been this way, I like being on my own from the start. So I don't want to call myself an "otaku".

I think otaku should be for people who were never like this, but somehow turned into this because of whatever obsession they have.

Hmm, Well I don't look at being an otaku as a badge of honor, I was just wondering what it trully means and what you need to like either "Like, Know" I don't really know, but Is it more of just having a love for anime and video games? Not really knowing Animes thoroughly but just really enjoying them? I'm so curious as to what the TRUE definition of a otaku is.

Well, one way to find out is to take the quiz that starts this old forum thread:

http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-316134/are-you-an-otaku

It's kind of tongue-in-cheek, and just for fun, but gets at some of what some people consider to be otakuness. (Yeah, old thread, but people keep periodically finding it and responding, so the thread still lives, though it's been quiet for a couple months now.)

(BTW, you just double-posted (two posts in a row in the same thread), which CR kind of frowns on. To avoid this, you can just edit the first post to include the contents of your second post. (And if you do that quickly enough, I think you'll be able to delete the second one). I'm going to leave it alone, but please keep it in mind for the future.)

Well from wikipedia.

The term is a loanword from the Japanese language. In English, it is typically used to refer to an obsessive fan of anime/manga, Japanese video games, and/or Japanese culture in general.

The term serves as a label similar to Trekkie or fanboy. However, use of the label can be a source of contention among some anime fans, particularly those who are aware of the negative connotations the term has in Japan. Unpleasant stereotypes about otaku prevail in worldwide fan communities, and some anime fans express concern about the effect these more extreme fans can have on the reputation of their hobby (not unlike sentiments in the comic book and science fiction fandoms).

Japan also holds some negative stigma behind the term due to the "The Otaku Murderer" in 1989.

As such many people who are a bit more experiance with the culture often avoid the term.

I myself half jokingly use the term to discribe myself for example. Not as a 'badge of honour' but the fact I realise that hobby wise, Anime, manga and Videogames, usualy Japanese, are practically the extent of my hobbies. If this doesn't border on obsessive I'm not sure what does.

Edit: And I score 80 in that above mentoned quiz, what am I doing with my life.

Thanks! I guess that means i'm an otaku then I absolutley love Anime, And Video games that are mostly Japanese, (I don't read manga as much but I do really enjoy manga) Thing is, i've played a lot more japanese games than I have watched anime I guess XD But, I'm watching a lot of anime now and I love it! Does this mean I can consider myself an otaku? (Not in a badge of honor sense )

WHAT AN INSULT.
MY ROOM WOULD OBVIOUSLY BE FILLED WITH WHITE HAIRED BISHOUNEN POSTERS, FIGURES, AND THOSE BODY PILLOW THINGS. NOT GIRLS.

and my ceiling would be all Kaworu.
